(Such strong desktop sales might even leave room for, oh... a mid-tower, perhaps? )

My main point with this thread is not iPods, nor product transitions, but the fact that Mac desktops continue to perform amazingly well, despite all the doom-and-gloom naysayers around here regarding the impact that the lack of a mid-level tower should be having on desktop unit sales. (hence the bold emphasis in my original post).

Sans ram purchased from apple, their desktops are one of the best deals going for that type of hardware.

Never buy RAM from any computer manufacturer.

I finally got a chance to use an Intel iMac for an extended period while visiting my family back home. A 2.8ghz 24 inch.
I hated the keyboard as does everyone else in the family. To the extent I took mercy on them and shipped them one of my older Apple KBs so they would have one that was nice. The mighty mouse is pretty awful too and the screen was obviously inferior to the DiamondPro I am looking at as I type this. In particular I was surprised at how bad the new flat KB was. I expected not to like it because I prefer KBs that are more inclined but I didn't expect it to be as difficult to type on and have to almost complete lack of tactile feedback.
I half expected to come away from using a new iMac with a more friendly attitude towards them but instead it was actually worse than I expected. Looking good was  all it seemed to do really well.
Apple's standards have fallen further than I had thought. As for their continuing popularity...well...P.T. Barnum gave us the answer to that.

I can understand your frustration with the keyboard and the mouse (I don't like the Mighty Mouse either) but the screen??? Seriously? Is that DiamondPro you use a CRT or LCD?

Have you read any of your own posts? Have you not been writing your actual opinions? And yet you really half expected to come away from using a new iMac with a more friendly attitude towards them???? You have proven time and again that you are thoroughly prejudiced against them. I would have bet you a month's pay that there wasn't a chance in hell that you would come away with a more friendly attitude towards them. I'm having trouble not laughing out loud at your post.

I like the new slim keyboards; snatched one up right away for my G5 system.  Mighty Mouse.... POS!  Apple should just give you a coupon for a Logitech mouse as part of the purchase.


As far as CRTs go; I'll never go back since staring for long periods of time is a lot less fatigue using a LCD vs. a CRT.  Of course I have a 30" Cinema display...so I'm spoiled.

Also, is it normal for the top of a 2.8ghz iMac to get damn near too hot to touch while doing simple web browsing and light iPhoto edits? I was really surprised at how hot it got, hotter than I have ever felt any computer I have ever used. Quite disconcerting.

Text is always going to look less smooth on an LCD than a CRT.

Don't you think that as LCD displays get increasingly more ppi that we will see a day (probably not that far in the future) when that won't be the case? Look at how good small text looks on an iPhone with only 160ppi.

I remember having this discussion the last time Apple had a favorable increase in desktop ratio.  The same applies now as it did then: a momentary increase is NOT a "general trend."  The general trend has remained unfavorable.  In fact, your presumption is even less applicable now: at least then, you could say the change was due to the new iMac, whereas now, there's no reasonable theory for presuming anything other than normal fluctuation.

Yes I would say in the next 2-3 years the technology will have matured enough to get much higher ppi counts which will render that argument a moot point.

And yes I do know how good the small text on the iPhone looks...quite impressive.

Wow. That is all I can say at this point.

A trend is a general direction in which something is developing or changing.  Sometimes, the desktop/laptop ratio improves, but usually it does not.  Therefore, the trend is downward despite a few improvements.  I think that's the simplest way to put it.  If you don't get it now, there's nothing I can do to help you.

You have seriously lost your way in this argument. You are grasping at straws if you really think that the ratio is the only measure that should be factored in to prove your argument.
