Pariah you should go check out HPs new LCD; it has 30bit color and factory tuned settings for various workflows. It will probably be my next monitor unless something better comes along when it is time. It is a 24" monitor.
Text is always going to look less smooth on an LCD than a CRT.
-markDon't you think that as LCD displays get increasingly more ppi that we will see a day (probably not that far in the future) when that won't be the case? Look at how good small text looks on an iPhone with only 160ppi.
FrankYes I would say in the next 2-3 years the technology will have matured enough to get much higher ppi counts which will render that argument a moot point.
And yes I do know how good the small text on the iPhone looks...quite impressive.

Just as importantly, for 2+ years we've had videocards that can digitally output 10-bit/channel data; and for me, the biggest advance brought so far by the '3D desktop' and related techs are in their leveraging the pixel shaders formerly mostly of benefit to games to other apps. The smooth curves and font antialiasing seen in Quartz, Aero and similar use shaders to blend subpixel values and achieve that smoothness and readability. FSAA is ever-increasing in power and quality; hopefully apps will scale to leverage increasingly more powerful hardware and better drivers.
If you've seen what recent hardware and algorithms can do with difficult objects like chain-link fences in games, you'd likely have high hopes as well about what can be achieved without very high resolutions.
(They're useful in video post-processing/playback, too).

I will be happy when LCDs dont look out of focus to me. Personally I think Apple's "font smoothing" looks like ass.

You have seriously lost your way in this argument. You are grasping at straws if you really think that the ratio is the only measure that should be factored in to prove your argument.
T's point seems pretty damn simple to understand myself. You have unusually poor reading comprehension for a teacher.

That's as may be... but individual mileage will vary as Mark shows, I was speaking generally, have aged eyes and a 19" Diamondtron still in use.

I agree that Apple's font smoothing sucks (regardless of settings). Vista's ClearType is awesome especially on an LCD, where it takes better advantage of subpixel smoothing (tripling the effective resolution). It's one of the few things Vista got right.

T's point seems pretty damn simple to understand myself. You have unusually poor reading comprehension for a teacher.
1) It isn't a problem of comprehension. But then if you were as smart as you think you are you might see that. It is a matter of my disbelief at the fact that no matter how much evidence is piled on there is a stubborn insistence by you and Mr. T to simply ignore it and come up with some ridiculous argument that you think makes your point.
2) You have an unusual lack of affect and show a high level of asocial and antagonistic behavior for a human being.
I'm through with your BS. If you want to personally attack me then send it in a private message. I'm sick of you trying to win an argument by attacking me personally. You don't know me and you have no idea what you are talking about. So unless you want to simply continue a pointless back and forth of insults I'd appreciate it if you'd just stop. This is EXACTLY what czach is talking about when he says the forums aren't the same as they used to be. It is asinine remarks like this that drive people away from this place. Frank, no offense, but weren't you the one making snide remarks to Pariah like "I'm having trouble not laughing out loud at your post."? Maybe he felt you were attacking him first. Just food for thought...

Guess what, offense taken anyway. I'm so sick of people defending personal attacks. Go back and read what I wrote before you make an assumption like that. Jesus. What is wrong with the people in these forums?
1) It wasn't a response to him that he was replying to.
2) There was NOTHING personal in my response to Mr. T.
3) The post you are referring to was not in any way shape or form a personal attack. If you have kept up at all with Pariah's absolute hatred of the iMac and the AIO in general there is no way you would be able to keep from laughing at his post where he stated that he
half expected to come away from using a new iMac with a more friendly attitude towards them
No one that has read his numerous posts against the iMac would have ever thought that for a minute. So it was amusing. The only way that could be interpreted as an attack is if you had no prior knowledge of all of his previous posts on the topic.

I remind you again that I have not made any argument in this thread. I posted a one reply to the original poster (which you didn't dispute). In actuality, the very subject of this thread is the growth ratio between desktops and laptops. This is posited as evidence to undermine the "naysayer's" claim that desktop sales could do better. If you do not believe this subject is relevant, then you should argue the point with the person who made it.

My advice: don't take it so personally. They're just his views and nobody is required to agree with them or to change them.
...having nothing in them of the feelings or principles of '76, now look to a single and splendid government of an aristocracy, founded on banking institutions and moneyed incorporations under the guise and cloak of their favored branches of manufactures, commerce and navigation, riding and ruling over the plundered ploughman and beggared yeomanry. -- TJ

That was absolutely a personal attack from me against you. It was in response to your unwarranted attack on me. I was just sick of listening to crap from someone like you. You needed to be called out for your bullsmurf.
As far as you not being the only one that has "called me out" you are correct. The problem with your assertion however is that I have absolutely zero respect for the people that have "called me out" on my attitude. So there attacks only annoy me in so much as they continue to take away from the real reason I come to these forums, for a conversation.
You and these "others" come here for a different reason, to attempt to place yourselves on pedestals and talk down to the other members of these forums. I can only assume this is because in your real lives you are not held in high regard but that is just my assessment based on your actions here. Maybe you're nice people in real life and only act like smurfs when you are hiding on the other side of the Internet.

Well there in lies your initial beef. By design, LCDs can't be out of focus when being run at native resolution. yes they do look soft when you run anything other than native resolution, but I frankly do not get why anyone would not run them native resolution.

Well, that sure seems to be part of it, but I also think we are seeing the schism that has opened between Mac users who are technically savvy, who no how to evaluate hardware and those who are primarily focused on appearance and get excited by fad driven popularity.
