Fan runs like crazy on my iMac G5
iMac G5 ppc, 1.8 ghz, 1.5 gb RAM, 10.5.4 (Leoapard)
My iMac's fan has been very weird lately. Even if I am doing NOTHING, the fan ramps up and runs like crazy. Right now, the hard drive is at 55 degrees and the CPU at 66 degrees, with my CPU fan at 5554 rpm.
I reset the SMU - no change. I just got a new logic board installed, so it can't be hardware. I also just did a complete erase and reinstall of Leopard - software runs just fine.
I can't imagine what's causing my iMac's fan to go nuts. I read quite a few threads and Apple articles and nothing seems to be helpful.
Could it be because my RAM modules aren't matched? I read that in one thread and I'm wondering if that's what it is.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Fan runs like crazy on my iMac G5
Anybody here try mounting an external fan on their iMac? Is this a stupid idea or a possible solution to the noise?
I'm coming to the realization that there may not be anything 'wrong' with my Mac. I've noticed quite a few people on the pages I've searched saying they have similar noise issues and the computer performs just fine.
I just feel like I'm piloting a small aircraft or running a weird power tool with all the noise my Mac makes.

No, that's not normal. Maybe if you were in an 90° room or something, but otherwise those fans should be inaudible unless you've been using the proc 100% for a long period. Open Activity Monitor to be sure you really are doing nothing. What's the biggest process going on?
You might try SMC Fan Control? Never tried it, personally.

Re: Fan runs like crazy on my iMac G5

I just realized I meant to post this in the Everyday Tech forum. Gah! What was I doing? I'd mod myself but oh well.
I turned my iMac off for a couple of hours. It was whisper quiet until I started Firefox up. But when I don't do anything with it, it backs down to quiet. I'm assuming resetting the SMU did help, I was just being paranoid and impatient. And absent minded, as I posted in the wrong forum! Heh.
Thanks for the software tip about fan controls, unfortunately I have a PPC G5, so I cannot take advantage of that particular application.

Re: Fan runs like crazy on my iMac G5
Dust? My iMac's air intakes on the bottom get clogged after a while, which really makes the fans work a lot harder, so I open it up about once a year and clean it out, and it's way quieter. Then again, if you've already been poking around inside of it, maybe you already took care of that.

Re: Fan runs like crazy on my iMac G5
Opened my iMac back up and double checked everything. Cleaned out fans and intakes with canned air. Closed it back up and reset the SMU when i plugged the power back in.
My fan is quieter and not crazy now. Firefox is pretty much the only thing that makes it run loud. So I will look into making it less of a RAM pig.
Actually the fan noise itself is not loud - it's a soft whirring that's not too bad. It's that blasted loud whine that comes with it. This is an iMac for crying out loud not a space ship! If I find something about decreasing the fan whine I'll definitely post it here.
As for an external cooling fan, I reread that and realized it probably isn't necessary - my desk area almost never gets above 70 degrees, so I don't think my iMac runs the risk of overheating.

Re: Fan runs like crazy on my iMac G5
For what it worth, I have a Mac pro that had a logic board problem. The fans had operated perfectly for a year, and since the logic board problem was not critical, I waited for the local Mac Store to open before having the repair. but I digress. When I got it back, the logic board had been replaced, and the problem was gone. But the fans ran at full speed.
A second trip through the repair shop revealed that in changing the logic board, the tech had loosened one of the control wires going to a sensor for the fan. it was plugged back in correctly and all is well now.
Had to tell you this, since your description is so similar.
Best of luck.

Re: Fan runs like crazy on my iMac G5
Aha! Found the problem I think.
Opened it back up and found that the metal clamp that holds down the plastic casing for the fan near the bottom (the one right under the G5 processor) wasn't pushed down all the way. I pushed on it and it clicked back in place. I also taped a 3 inch strip of paper under the left side of my iMac. It doesn't restrict air flow to the fan, and now the noise level is lighter and more bearable.
I was beginning to think I might have to take it back in to the Apple store, but everything is functioning normally, so i feel good to go. I'll just keep an ear out for any weirdness.

Well, it looks like whatever I did to fix the problem isn't going to help, because it was the logic board. The one they put in last week turned out be defective.
Thursday, my computer would go into sleep mode every 30 seconds and my fans would run non stop. My CPU fan was running at 5600 rpm and I wasn't doing ANYTHING. HRRRMMPH. So I took it back to the Apple store and they're going to repair the 'repair' from last week for free. Still, I was a little frazzled so after I dropped off my sick iMac I went and got something to help me relax. Chocolate.
I am a ditz. When I go to pick up my iMac, I am NOT leaving the store till I run it and make sure I didn't get a defective repair.
But the folks at my nearest Apple store are helpful, and heck I don't have to pay for anything so I'm not gonna gripe forever about it.
Out of curiosity, what is a normal temp/fan speed range for the CPU on an iMac? I googled that and I'm getting lots of random and not very helpful stuff.

Re: Fan runs like crazy on my iMac G5
'K, the Mac is back.
Basically, the 'repair' from 2 weeks ago was faulty so the apple guys at the apple store fixed it again free of charge. It's purring along now and the fans are no longer crazy.
Interestingly, I asked them if they knew what normal cpu temp / fan speed ranges are for the iMac and they.....had no clue. So I will go to Apple's forum and see what the fine folks there say.
