Disappearing Photoshop

I've noticed this problem since Jaguar, but it seems that since CS3, and now Leopard, it's gotten much worse. Photoshop will simply vanish. There doesn't seem to be any set command sequence that causes it to happen though I've had it happen three times this week when opening the "Save As" dialogue.

It still shows as being active in the Dock and any files that were open are still listed in the dock, but they are gone, baby, gone. Nor will Photoshop quit, either with Cmd-q or with a force quit. Worse, the entire system is garbled. No restart, just a force shutdown and reboot. It it was just my machine I'd reformat my drive or something, but it's happening to all our retouchers in the studio.

Has anyone encountered this, and is there a workaround?

If they get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about the answers.

You may need to re-install.

If Photoshop doesn't have enough room for a scratch disk- this happens.

If Photoshop doesn't have enough actual RAM (three times each file open) - this happens.

How much room is left on the actual hard-drive, not incuding your network drives?

What kind of Mac is it? Specs

One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. It is simply too painful to acknowledge even to ourselves that we've been so credulous. -Carl Sagan
