Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
Friends - I too have "sigh" when I read this question, but now it happen to me (hahahha)
The screen from my 15" 1.67GHZ PowerBook G4 go black on the bottom now (since two day ago) and I plug my mac into external monitor to use it. To fix it here in Jakarta USD400 for USED screen... argghhh ....
So i say, "it time to buy MacBook Pro!" but to be honest, I tell my wife before that I want to buy MacBook Pro when it have the BluRay, but now i nearly force to buy current model.
Any rumor on when next upgrade?? Logic say October (little before christmas time) ...
THANKS

Re: Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
All the rumor mills are saying that the next revision is coming out in September. There's lots of speculation that it might have better innards (more than just the usual processor speed bumps, etc.) and that it will be a little slimmer than the present one.
I wouldn't buy now. I'd definitely wait for this next revision. It might be a substantially different model.

I still doubt blu-ray. Maybe as an overpriced option, but not standard. And I don't believe the September rumor either. I'm guessing January.

Re: Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
I'm in a similar situation, except I'm waiting for new MacBooks. My 15" 1.5Ghz PowerBook G4 has been gradually going south for the last couple years. It's getting close to unbearable. Now, with an insurance settlement in hand, I have to decide whether to wait or just jump on the back to school special.
Most of the rumors point to September, which sounds reasonable. I can always hope for earlier.

Doesn't the supply channel for existing models usually dry up a few weeks before a new release?

Re: Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
Thank you everyone!!! i really wish it september ... that mean i must suffer only 60 more day!! BluRay I only want because I think it wave of future, but in Jakarta a BluRay disc now cost USD28.00!! I suspecting BluRay driver can burn DVD/CD still so at least when I BluRay in my laptop I safe for when price finally come down a lot (and still burn DVD / CD) ... I just burn 50 DVD and 50 VCD for customer so believe it or not in Indonesia many people still use VCD format.
We never know what happen 3 year from now but I know if i buy MacBook Pro now, it will be what i use in 2011, so I want up to date model, hahahaha.
thank you again everybody

Yeah, and Apple just told all it's retailers to stock up now because laptops are going to get scarce in the near future.

thanks Nayrk - this great forum and moderator and people great (hahahah, free marketing!)
it funny but I really think I will use computer monitor for 60 days. Okay, it take away meaning from portable but really, september very close plus here we have the rhamadan from 1 sept-30 sept so everything quiet and no rushing to buy because after ramadhan is Lebaran/Idul Fitri (like christmas new year holiday season style) so Indonesia not "back in the action" until October 20!!!
okay thank you again everybody for comment and link!

Re: Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
Hey everyone.
I've been wondering this same thing. I need a new system for school and have been frequenting the education store. Right now they are offering a full rebate on ipod touches with the purchase of a system no later than sep 15th. I know they like to give away iPod rebates to students (have been for years) but does this date mean anything specific?
I am also interested in hearing any opinions about which way the price will go for the next mbp.

Re: Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
Also theres the nVidia GPU problems which Apple might have to announce too. Many of the other makers using the M8600GT are coming out and announcing the problems...bet Apple will sooner or later. All I can say is, its a great time to buy a PC with ATI graphics
. Sony's FW line is real nice too if you don't need the power GPU. Beautiful 16.4 widescreen and Radeon 3470M all for less than a MB...Vista is the only minus in the deal.

Re: Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
I'm often on a Black MacBook. I used to think the MacBook Pro was nicer and more comfortable, but not any more. I prefer the smaller form factor of the MacBook. The only thing I'd get a MacBook Pro for would be FW800, express slot, and illuminated keys. Carrying a honkin' 15" silver (eeewwww) heavy thing is worse than carrying a smaller lighter MacBook. Plus I don't like the button locking latch. The magnet latch is way easier. They have to make a smaller, blacker MBPro.
If you look around the table and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you.

Re: Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
I just checked the Dell site and found that they are offering a Blu-Ray RW drive substitute in their laptops as a US$400 option (so you know that if Apple were offering the same, the option would be for $600+).

The issue is as of February was Apple wanted at least slot load BD-R and all Sony could promise to deliver at the time was slot load Blu-Ray/DVD±RW.

Re: Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
Yeah but it does explain a little about Apple's choice (except with the Mac Pro.) Apple can either take flack for holding off investing in change until they get a supposedly ideal optical longer term solution or they can satisfy some people now but pay for it in flack for investing in an inferior optical solution for a foreseeably short period then investing again in a more ideal solution (especially since slot loads are notoriously difficult to upgrade).

Re: Millionth time this question has been asked: Next Gen MacBook Pro
No doubt, although I sincerely hope that if the Pro lines do "go blu" then Apple will kill the combo drive in the lowend MacBook, and perhaps the mini.

THey tend to do it within a month of the back to school promotion ending.
