Are you replacing a gif with a jpg or png? Are you replacing a jpg with a png?

Neither option will work. You have to replace with the same image format or the format that comes earlier alphabetically. 'user number'.gif appears preferentially to 'user number'.jpg which appears preferentially to 'user number'.png.

Use JPG or GIF

Note: using Gifs will block future use of JPGs
