Breaking: Georgia invades South Ossetia
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne … egion.html
The Caucasus have descended into crisis after Georgian troops launched a full-scale military assault against Moscow-backed rebels in an attempt to wrest control of the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
So, bad! The big question here is how far will the Russians take this. They've been supporting the rebels pretty blatantly recently, will they get directly involved? If things get too hot here, then Abkhazia (another breakaway region of Georgia, also Russian backed) may pull something as well. The ball is in the Russian court now.
I could bore you with a philosophical tirade about freedom and tyranny, or try and explain to you what new horizons are suddenly open to me, but I doubt you would understand and if you did it might frighten you. That amuses me.

I don't see the Russians fighting directly.

Re: Breaking: Georgia invades South Ossetia
I wouldn't call this an "invasion" since Ossetia is part of Georgia.
I wonder how this will affect Russia's other international relations? A distraction maybe?

At least no more so than England invading the US in the late 1770s or the US invading the CS in the 1860s.

Re: Breaking: Georgia invades South Ossetia
Jesus, I stand corrected.
"All day today they've been bombing Georgia from numerous warplanes and specifically targeting (the) civilian population, and we have scores of wounded and dead among (the) civilian population all around the country," Mikhail Saakashvili told CNN in an exclusive interview.
Saakashvili also said Georgian troops had shot down two Russian aircraft.
Asked whether Georgia and Russia were now at war, he said, "My country is in self-defense against Russian aggression. Russian troops invaded Georgia."
Russian television showed a convoy of Russian tanks and said they were heading into the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia as escalating tensions over the region threatened to boil into full blown conflict.

Re: Breaking: Georgia invades South Ossetia
I strongly believe that most Russians have yet to give up their sense of ownership, or inheritance, of the old Russian and Soviet empires. I've just never been sure how far they're willing to go, over the long term, to reclaim that territory.
Or maybe what the Russians call the "near abroad" will just become their equivalent of America and Central America: officially independent, but historically dominated by the local superpower.

Better question - does anyone (other than the Georgians and Russians) care? The US is wrapped up in two wars already, and the British are pretty deep in it with us. I'm having a hard time imagining almost any other forces in Europe willing to take on the Russians at this juncture.

Maybe they can bring it up to the UN Security Council.

Re: Breaking: Georgia invades South Ossetia
I don't think many people care, but they should.
Hopefully this is just a border skirmish. But how far will the Russians go? Will they try to bring Georgia back into the Soviet-style fold? Seems an extreme scenario, but in the vacuum left by Dubya's policies, more is possible now than has been for quite some time.

That's some fine bombing they have there... they should have brought that game to Iraq.

I guess Georgia will have to recall its troops from Iraq.
Other republics, I'm thinking Belarus in particular, may become involved. Certainly a test for the new Russian president, and his master, of course.

Are you joking? The main, US-financed, oil pipeline from Azerbaijan that delivers huge amounts of oil directly to Western Europe goes through Georgia (in order to not go through Russia and/or Iran).
If you've not noticed gas prices are high around the world, and supply is tight. Knock yourself out not caring.

They care, thats for sure. The US is a big backer of Georgia, providing them with weapons and training. But nobody can really do anything about this. No western nation is going to actively challenge Russia in this. They'll talk about stopping the fighting... and thats it. This is, after all, Russia's doorstep. Nobody can intervene militarily. Nobody's going to put sanctions on Russia. I think Saakashvili made a very bad mis-calculation. Maybe he thought because the Olympics had started Russia wouldn't want to make an international scene. Maybe he thought they were bluffing when they said they "wouldn't stand aside".
But Russia is really sending a message to the world. Its mobilized its military on a moments notice, and took off the gloves. Tanks, bombings, the works. It isn't going to stop until Georgia has totally withdrawn from South Ossetia, and maybe not even then. Russia has been talking big lately, and this a perfect time for them to show the world how strong they are, and how nobody is going to smurf with them on their own turf.
The joys of a nationalist Russia...

Re: Breaking: Georgia invades South Ossetia
I think it has broader ramifications because Georgia has been trying to get into NATO for some time now, and has even talked of joining the EU. Meanwhile the Russkies deliberately targeted, by the accounts I've seen, the oil pipeline to Turkey. Meanwhile what is the West doing? Not a goddamned thing so far. Nor will it. No one has much stomach for tensions with Russia.
This backing-down will have spin-off effects, most likely. For example Russia will feel emboldened to be tougher on the world stage, including such hotspots as Iran.

Makes you think about the other former Soviet/satellite nations that are joining NATO and how this will affect Russia's imperialism.
