Until recently, residents of Hong Kong could obtain British passports. Does that mean Britain has a claim over Hong Kong? Would they be justified in sending in the Royal Navy if they didn't like the way things were going there?
Yes they could get passports, up until 1997 when Hong Kong stopped being a territory of the UK and was handed over to China. And yes Brittan had a claim over HK as they leased it and during that time became a territory of Brittan .... and until the transfer the British provided military protection for their territory which included ports for the British Navy. You really should research your examples better.

Let's just take the issue of passports off the table as an important talking point. Because it's not important. It's completely irrelevant.
It's hardly not important. It's a clear indication to the mentality of the people... these people really don't want to be a part of Georgia and look to Russia to protect them. Take with it they have tried to leave the Georgia twice there really is not denying that the SO people want nothing to do with Georgia.

Russian officials had given signals that the fighting could pave the way for them to be absorbed into Russia. There's quite a few South Ossetians that would like to be part of Russia.
Depends on whether they have been Russified. The Abzkans up don't want to be part of Georgia or Russia. It's just that Russia is able to protect them from Georgia at the moment. They will deal with the bear at a later date. If they can. Two evils.

Perhaps they can learn something from Chechnya's experience.

To my knowledge SO has never tried to issue their own passports.
In 2001, the speaker of the South Ossetian parliament wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin asking him to annex the country. Foreign Minister Murat Djioev tells me that joining Russia is also his desire, but independence is the first step on that path. For now, though, Russia seems satisfied to exercise de facto control over South Ossetia. It has given Russian passports to South Ossetians—who can't travel on their South Ossetian passports—and now 96 percent of South Ossetians are Russian citizens. I ask Djioev about the Russian flags and Putin billboards around town. "I want us to be part of Russia, but I understand this won't happen quickly. As Russian citizens, we want to demonstrate that the Russian flag is our flag and Putin is our president," he says. Several top officials, including the minister of defense and the head of the security service, are Russians. Djioev makes no apologies for it. "When it's necessary to invite a Russian specialist here, we'll do it. In San Marino, many of the top officials are Italians, and nobody criticizes them for it," he says. (Russia will, in 2008, move to formalize ties with South Ossetia as well as Abkhazia, further ratcheting up tensions with Georgia.)

Mikhail Saakashvili seems to be acting like he has a screw loose the last day or so. What is up with that?

He's been ranting since this thing began. I discovered very quickly he is not worth listening to. All he does is spout rhetoric, accuses the Russians of being, well, everything, and makes up a ton of stuff. He is totally unreliable, as has been shown numerous times now.
I could bore you with a philosophical tirade about freedom and tyranny, or try and explain to you what new horizons are suddenly open to me, but I doubt you would understand and if you did it might frighten you. That amuses me.

Or it could be that he's upset at seeing his country overrun by invaders determined to return his country to its previous slave-like existence.

Well I have no idea who will get in after him. But I certainly wouldn't bet on Saakashvili being in power for much longer, and I bet whoever replaces him will pay a bit more attention to what the Russians have to say.
