Trollblocker / Ignore
It would be nice if we had one. We've been besiged by trolls lately, folks who can turn an ordinary discussion of QuickTime or X11 into an opportunity to vent and perfect their own brand of rudeness. I could give you a half-dozen names in just the past year, but you know them already, I'm sure.
Eventually they do get banned, but it's ugly while they're still here, and when they come back with new names, and so on. It sure would be nice if we had some sort of "ignore" feature on these forums. Each of us gets to have a list of names whose posts we'd rather leave out when the browser shows a page, similar to AOL chat's "Ignore". Just put it in there with the Display Preferences. Some sort of list where I can choose who or what to tune out. Call it "Post Filter" or "Ignore List", something like that.
Pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaasssssseeeeeeeee???
I know I'm not the only one who wants it. I got the idea from TheChronoTrigger, who suggested it in one of those threads that got turned into a display of bad manners. I'm sure others would appreciate it. We didn't need it a few years ago, but now we do.
It would help the mods, too, if they're bothered by having to evaluate whether a member should be banned or not. Just leave it up to us members. It could also help avoid threads being locked. That happens too much, I think, usually because a thread degenerated into trollery, insults, and general rudeness that a trollblocker could help avoid.

Re: Trollblocker / Ignore
Show a little bit of self control and don't post in those threads. They die really quick if no one posts in them.
Anyway, if you block one person, if someone quotes them you will end up reading the post anyway. It is a moot point.
Also, blocking people by default is not a way to build communities. Some trolls may turn out to be just a little misguided and figure out how they are supposed to act.

Re: Trollblocker / Ignore
THANK YOU!
Ditto. I do appreciate this. If I had a hot sister, I'd set her and GUI up on a date. Alas, I have no hot sister, at least not one who's willing to date total strangers just because I think it'd be a good way to say thanks. Sorry.

Well, GUI might take any kind of date you can arrange.

Indeed. I thought he would be an excellent test but I couldn't.

Re: Trollblocker / Ignore
Could we have a "stronger" version of ignore in which case it emulates a perma-ban on the designated user? Basically it would erase all threads created by the poster, and remove any and all posts from the designated user from discussion (no more "you have ignored this user" messages).

Re: Trollblocker / Ignore
Oh, and just a little update, you can now ignore ILVMac&Cheese (and other users containing a '&' symbol). I'm still working out some other issues with it, though, but have become sidetracked with other projects.
Hard work may not kill you, but why take chances?
