Re: Predictions on Obama's VP pick?

Appears to be official

Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, "Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee."

Bah, presidential candidates don't need foreign policy experience. George W had none, and look how well he's fared.

Well, he's had Darth Cheney to back him up there.

Re: Predictions on Obama's VP pick?

For Obama fans, how is this positive?

One it underscores how weak Obama is on foreign policy. Two, it undercuts the whole politics of change them as Biden has been in the senate since Nixon I think. Can't find a more inside the beltway kind of guy.
Third the guy is a gaffe machine, with scores of foot in the mouth instances caught on tape (including his suggesting that Obama is not ready to lead) which will be picked apart by the republicans. Four, he got almost no votes whenever he's run as president. He doesn't give Obama a state, he's never really connected with the general populace.

And back to foreign policy, here's the guy who is supposedly so smart and experienced and yet HE VOTED FOR THE IRAQ WAR! (and I'd bet if we went back to the Iraq Liberation Act you'd see his signature there too). All that experience and smarts, and he came to the same conclusion as Bush. Now he can argue he was tricked by evil Cheney, but considering his "experience" and the fact that he served on the intelligence committee, it would be kind of hard to make that fly.

He hasn't been in the senate for thirty years? He didn't vote for the authorization of force? he didn't get almost no votes whenever he tried running for president?

I'm sure that he voted for it before he voted against it.

If the president actually gets to do that this time around, it will be a refreshing change of pace.

He's the president. He gets to decide how much he wants the VP to do.

Re: Predictions on Obama's VP pick?

Well, one must assume that he picked Biden because he hoped that he'd be able to help out doing something...

Anyhow, is it not possible that a pro-war VP could impart a bit of a stain on Obama's anti-Iraq war reputation? Or, is the base so mesmerized that they won't care?

Obama sets the policy and uses Biden's expertise to aid him.

Do you think that he could have found some anti-Iraq war expertise instead?

Re: Predictions on Obama's VP pick?

Given the misinformation floating around at the time, I only really blame those spreading it. In fact even if they had not be spreading misinformation, I'd at least have been calling for investigation in the WMD situation and suggesting firm deadlines on Iraqi compliance of UN term due to Hussein's actions in their shows.

Quite. I respect those whom are upfront about those changes and the reasons behind them. I might not always agree with them but I respect them.

Unless OBama picks himself I don't know how you would get away from this issue.

Whoa. . . everlong and I actually agree on something. . . Obama should actually pick someone like Bernie Sanders. . . someone who actually wants to solve problems here. . . but we're so focused on foreign policy that he doesn't see that as workable, and the media will convince people that it isn't. There's still the cabinet where you can put the people with the hard foreign policy experience. The executive leadership is supposed to be civilian.

I will never defend people who voted for that war. I've talked to numerous people who've said "the congress got bad information". . . folks, these ARE the people who have access to the BEST information we have, TIMELY. If a normal shmoe like me figured out that invading Iraq's a bad idea so could have all those congresspeople who were "misled" by the evil Cheney. . . and so an extension of the one bad apple argument saves this administration from having to examine itself and saves future administrations who represent the same money people from having to institute any changes.

Make no mistake, Cheney is evil, he represents quite a goodly portion of arrogance and hubris that drives our interventionist policy and obviously has no qualms about profiting from other people's misfortune but I believe that all the congresspeople who were supposedly misled were actually quite willing to be misled, which is why there'll never be a real inquiry by congress into the transgressions of this administration which have cost us so much in terms of human cost, wasted wealth which could have been used to solve problems here, and wasted opportunity.
