Hacking to find the truth about a Chinese gymnast
Source.
Basically this guy used the caching feature in the Baidu search engine to track down an official Chinese record which show that He Kexin--a member of the Chinese gymnatics team and recently gold medalist in the uneven bars--is actually 14 years old. Just a reminder: the rules for the Olympics state that competitors in gymnastics must be at least 16 years old.

Haven't the Chinese regularly cheated in this manner, even prior to this Olympics?

Perhaps. This might become this era's version of East German women (or, rather, "women").

Another (sadly) amusing story is the Chinese "free speech zones" which were a condition of them getting the games. The idea is, people would be able to apply for permits to protest in a specific spot (a park).
But anyone who's applied has been arrested or has just plain vanished.
smurfing IOC. They've ruined the Olympics for me.

A ridiculous rule - most top female gymnasts are past their peak at 16.

What? Corruption at the Olympics? I can't believe that you'd like like that on the internets.

Compared to the days when the Soviet women's teams had 5 o'clock shadow it seems pretty tame anymore.

The age limit is still a stupid rule.
It's like soccer here in the US - a lot of soccer leagues will not allow kids to use their head to hit the ball until they are 15 - and then we wonder why our national soccer team gets its ass kicked all the time and has to hire foreign has been players.

I don't thing that headers are the only reason that the US (and Canadian) soccer teams mainly suck. Probably has more to do with the prevalence of (real) football, baseball, basketball and hockey. Basically no one but 8-year olds play soccer around here.

Indeed. And (at least in my case), they hated it.

Re: Hacking to find the truth about a Chinese gymnast
I got ONE DAY of soccer when I was in elementary school. We ran up and down the field and really wore ourselves out. I was stoked about it because, unlike the other sports, none of the other kids knew anything about it (this was back in the Stone Age, of course) so we were all even in experience. I was looking forward to learning something new and MAYBE having a chance to compete.
But then the next day we were back to football, baseball and basketball.....
Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.
Unless you become as little children, there's no way you will believe this crap.

You'd better believe it.
In real football, the real men that play it don't writhe around on the ground and cry like babies because someone grazed their shin.

You're right, they retire by 25 and die by 30.
