Idiot cops
http://www.wzzm13.com/news/news_story.a … ryid=97226
First of all - it is a common boa constrictor, not a burmese python.
Secondly, it's small enough that it is a danger to no one.
Thirdly, of course it is going to attack your truck when you intentionally run it over 10 times. Intentionally running it over was cruelty to animals. No one was in harms way, a competent animal control officer should have been called.
Finally, by discharging your firearm at the snake, the officer took an un-necessary risk. The snake was in no way going to harm anyone, but a bullet can easily ricochet and hurt someone.
Smurfing idiots.
The real reason that we can’t have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this: You cannot post “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” “Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery,” and “Thou Shall Not Lie” in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment. -- George Carlin (I think)

Re: Idiot cops
Did you see the one where a female cop shot at a snake in a tree, missed, and the descending bullet missed a 10-year-old kid by about 4 feet? Since she missed, she decided to take another shot. She missed the snake again, but that time the descending bullet hit the 10-year-old in the head.
But if it's plain-old inaccuracy you're looking for, go look and see what cops have to say about aviation accidents and incidents.

Yes - I saw that one.
And she was shooting at a completely harmless native snake, in violation of the laws she was sworn to protect.

True.
The cop only shot the snake - he should have though arrested the idiots that decided to run it over a bunch of times.
But it clearly was not a scenario where he should have even drawn his firearm.

Michigan? I'd expect this is georgia but not Michigan.
And daniel, what happened to that boy that was hit by the descending bullet? Got a link? If I figure right, a piece of led shouldn't really be able to hurt someone, even at terminal velocity. Unless of course she was shooting at a lower degree of angle.

He died instantly. The bullet still was moving several hundred feet per second horizontally. Even if it was falling straight down at terminal velocity, it'd have killed him. People die all the time from others firing their guns up in the air.

Which is why you call an animal control officer, you don't intentionally run it over with your truck.
If you come across a stray dog, do you know if it is vicious?
Probably not. But if you intentionally ran it over with your truck, you would likely be charged with cruelty to animals before your face hit the ground as the officer hogtied you.
A loose dog is far far far far far more likely to be a danger to people than a loose snake.

Very true indeed.
Dogs can still catch up to you even if you are biking, snakes... not so much.

I know practically nothing about snakes, but simple logic would tell me that a 14 foot long snake IN smurfing MICHIGAN wouldn't be some gigantic poisonous, dangerous reptile.

Mythbusters tested that. Their conclusions: straight up so the bullet is simply falling at terminal velocity will not result in a death (same with a bullet simply dropped from high enough to reach terminal velocity), outside of laboratory conditions it is next to impossible to actually shoot straight up. If there is the slightest deviation in angle the bullets trajectory becomes ballistic which can be and has been fatal.

Surely there's a compromise to be had between getting close enough to let it "squeeze you" and running it over with a car.

It's not going to jump crossed the road, fly through the air, and "squeeze you to death" in a matter of seconds...
It's a snake, you can out WALK the thing, if you don't like it walk around it ... and call someone who knows something about snakes.
That snake was nothing a few leather gloves a large cloth bag ad some willing hands couldn't have fixed.
