You're not the only ones who have elections, you know ...
Canada may face fall election
It's just rumour, but word around the capital is that the prime minister (head of a minority government) might call the election shortly after Labour Day. If he does indeed drop the bomb, we can look forward to a dreary election campaign lasting ... oh, several weeks, certainly. Some of the parties involved might spend upwards of perhaps $15, even $20 million.

I don't get it. Don't we have fixed election dates now? Unless the govt falls, the PM can't call an election.

Harper gave himself some loopholes in that law. The system hasn't actually changed. It would be a case of him breaking his promise, not the law.
