I don't understand people.
I took my dog for a walk tonight. It seems to me that what once was a rare inconvenience is now becoming standard practice around here.
Take a look at this:
And this:
These are just a couple of examples close to my house. I literally saw this dozens of times on a short 30 minute walk.
Are so many people total smurfs? Or are they just idiots?
I honestly don't see a third option.

Were they all SUVs and/or Minivans? ::Playing a hunch::

I'm going to guess it's a little form column A and a little from column B.
on a side note, isn't it illegal to block the sidewalk like that?

Re: I don't understand people.
Most seemed to be SUVs and minivans, but many were cars too. I'll have to count the vehicle types next time.
What drives me nuts is that many times there are two car lengths open in their driveways and another car length between the sidewalk and the street, yet they still park directly over the sidewalk.
I need to train my dog to pee on them...

Re: I don't understand people.
I suspect there are smurfs out there who because they are smurfs buy SUV and/or Minivans as a status symbol rather than an actual need for that type of vehicle and they are typically the sort of jerk whom drives like everyone else is in their way, can't get off the phone to drive properly, and can't be bother to park properly.

People don't buy minivans as status symbols, and neither of the two SUV's pictured are of the type people buy as status symbols.

Re: I don't understand people.
Isn't that just parking way the hell back so the other cars can get out of the garage? Did either of those garages have basketball hoops?
Blocking the sidewalk is lame, sure, but there are plenty of legit reasons to back it up a bit.
Is street parking legal there?

Option 3: both. I vote for that.

Those SUVs are the type redneck smurfs (that is to say rednecks who are smurfs) buy to have a stylish alternative to a pickup and as far as Minivans go try the bogus "soccer mom" types (though many of them are switching to SUVs like that).
Certainly some people need trucks like that but some of them are obviously too manicured, especially after a couple years, to be anything but a status vehicle.

Did they just get their driveways re-blacked?

See if it's illegal where you are. It is here. They can be ticketed for that here. It's illegal to block a sidewalk so pedestrians have to go out into the street to get by.

Hey, I applied for a job at GFX not too far from you, about a year and a half ago.

Re: I don't understand people.
It's been a while since I've updated my location, and I actually moved a little ways since then.
The coordinates are correct, and my Celica is even on google's street view. Cool.
Neither of these places had basketball hoops in the driveway. Actually, the one house full of white trash with the basketball hoops never has a car blocking the sidewalk. And parking is allowed in the streets here (we even have extra actual parking spaces) so there is really no excuse to park across the sidewalk to keep the garage accessible.
I'll have to check to see whether this sort of thing is illegal or not here.
macforme: We walked right by the GFX on our walk last night.

Re: I don't understand people.
There is more than enough room for cars to get out of the garage.
Those people are blocking the sidewalk on purpose and I bet they have some dimwit/misguided reasoning for it.
How much pedestrian activity goes on in that neck of the woods? (Some places have a wierd avoidance of any pedestrian activity and are openly hostile to it.)
Are dog walkers good about picking up after the dogs?

Print some sheets of paper with "do NOT park over sidewalk". Glue it to their windshields.

Kick a dent in the doors as you walk by.
Or, if you'd rather not vandalize, tilt the rear view mirrors out of whack.

I don't live too far from you (far west 'burbs). It's illegal in the Fox Valley area.

Fixed. I do that to asses who park too close and don't leave a can opener.

Re: I don't understand people.
decker, that's a pretty good walk, about 4 miles round trip, right?
The building is pretty old and kind of dumpy, but man, I really wanted to work there (I do prepress). They have their own ad agency in house, and their own visual graphics department, along with their core screen/digital printing business. They are making buck.
Ah well, I definitely don't miss what would have been a 45min (each way) drive with today's gas prices.
uki, it would probably be easier to just pick up some obnoxious bumper stickers and slap them on the windshield while walking past. I'll bet you could palm one, peel off the liner, and just brush the windshield as you walk by.
Actually I would be more a fan of slapping one on the bumper where they may not see it for a while.

Nah, not that far. -I updated my coordinates to be correct for our new place.
It's probably about 2-3 miles round trip for our regular walk to the library and back.
Next time I will count the vehicles blocking the sidewalk and types. There was just an insane number of them yesterday. I don't walk to the street anymore either. If someone blocks the sidewalk, me and my dog are walking through their front yard.
