All You College Peeps
Hey guys. I'm about to become a mac addict... but first I wanna know how many of you college peeps use a mac for college stuff (word processing, internet, taking to class, etc.). I come from the land where the macs are rare and pc's are everywhere. So in my teenage rebellious nature, I want to get a mac. I'm planning on going to University of California, Irvine, but have no clue on how many people use macs or even if they're compatable! So in sum... I don't wanna blow 3,000 bucks on something that no one uses. Let me know! That "Place Order" button looks veeerrryyyy tempting! :?:

Re: All You College Peeps
What are you planning on majoring in?
Unless what you are doing in college is computer oriented (programming, webdesign, etc.) you would be fine with a mac, or a pc, as other than specific programs the DO the same thing.
Most colleges seem to let you use anything you want to use, unless you are in a certain class, which may have special requirements.
If all else fails, just get VPC and you'll be fine.

Re: All You College Peeps
I'm in college and I use a Mac. Like the previous guy said, unless you are doing anything specifically needing a Mac or a PC either one is good, but a Mac is always better.
If you are going to do any designing, get a Mac. If you are going to do programming, get a Mac, and use the computer labs.

Macs are fine in colleges. The only real factor is your OS preference.

Yeah, it seems to really be which you perfer. If you are a programming student, that shouldn't really dishearten you. There's just a few things you should really do differently. That or get Virtual PC.
Plus, I'd like to go on the record saying nobody makes a better notebook than Apple. Tough little buggers, they are, with features to boot. And dont forget to look out for discounts to college students. Even the piddly $50 helps, not to speak of the mystical ADC Student Membership.

Re: All You College Peeps
Oh, yes, if you are a developer, get the ADC student membership because the discount on hardware is great.
I also agree that Apple laptops are toughest ones I have ever used. We have a thread a while back about an Apple laptop that survived an oven.
If you get a laptop, really consider a mac.

Re: All You College Peeps
Honestly, I don't see very many people using laptops at class here. Maybe that's just the environment at my school, who knows.
I'll put in another word about programming tools. If you have to use your own personal machine for programming apps you might have to stick with Windows. (Trying to use JBuilder on my G4 made me want to cry. Why do Java apps suck so incredibly hard?) I either use my own PC or go to one of the labs on campus that already has the software installed.

Programming is great on a mac. We use UNIX machines for all of our assignments, so I can just write it on my mac, and porting it is trivial. I dont know why so many colleges make students learn to program on windows before UNIX... doesnt make sense to me.

Jonny427... At one time the UCI bookstore was using iMacs for PointOfSale! You might call the bookstore and see if there is a student discount on Macs.

Re: All You College Peeps
I go to the University of Idaho and I use my mac for everything computer related here. I love not having to go to the computer labs, although i'm at one right now supposedly studying.
I'm a computer science major and mac os x is great for it since we use unix instead of windows to program in. Later on in the program we might use windows, but for at least the next year or so it will be unix. Besides that I don't think that I could stand living with a Windows PC for very long. In short the mac is a great computer for college.
Everyone's a voyeurist, they're watching me watch them watch me right now.

Re: All You College Peeps
With the exception of Engineering (where the use of Auto Cad is a necessity) a mac on a college campus is a sure thing. Typically college campuses have larger pockets of macs (labs, random profs who prefer them, etc.) than what you'd see in high school.
I got my iMac while I was still in school and the coolest thing was plugging it straight into the school network and, yes, it just worked.

Most of the engineering at my school doesn't place a high necessity on drafting and instead goes with MATLAB, which is cross platform. Of course, I can only speak on the part of Mechanical and Electrical. I'm sure Civil guys eat and breath AutoCAD.

crappers... AutoCAD?? no clue what that is (i'm just a high school senior!) but it sounds intimidating. But I still got this not-so-trusty Compaq that i can still use if i end up eating and breathing AutoCAD... so i guess the mac it is! The UCI student discount is $300 off the powerbook plus 10% on all prepherials, which I think is hecka good.

Re: All You College Peeps
Most classes I've had are on Macs, and in the ones that have been PC, many people bring their own Macs. In the dorms, I'd say it's about 30% Mac, and in design classes it's about 40% ownership. ALL of the teachers that teach any kind of graphic design class are Mac people.

Re: All You College Peeps
At my school, San Jose State University (California -- Near Cupertino). The bookstore uses a lot of macs. The school network is fully compatible with airport cards and Apple computers.
The computer labs have tons of macs. The bookstore sells mostly Macs. And they have 1 Gateway on display.
Professors have macs. Students have macs. Word files and powerpoint files are exchanged freely. I don't see any problem with using a Mac at school.
One time tho, my friend with a mouth watering powerbook couldnt attach his notebook to the projector for a powerpoint presentation so we emailed the attachment to my other friends pc and he hooked up to the projector I think via serial port.
Anyways, you won't have a problem. Maybe once or twice in your college career, you'll face a little obstacle, but its well worth the Mac experience. And maybe a cute girl will look at your computer and say "whats that?" And maybe it will start up a conversation and you'll fall in love with your soul mate. Who the f*ck knows.
