Spore is out
Yay! Here's our review, and here's a nice photo album of one gamer's journey through the universe.

The New York Times also had a nice review of it with some thoughts from scientists.

I find the fact that an Intel Mac Mini and older Macbooks can play it in Windows (even in Windows Vista) but not in OS X aggravating. ::Makes hand shuffling motion to emphasize point::

Sees Sci's gesture, reads
A major graphical error with ATI Radeon 1600- and 1900-based video hardware forces players to turn off a key visual effect, making the game look worse but run well. EA says that an OS X update will fix the problem, but Apple controls that rollout.
...& rolls on floor, clutching sides.
You've taken a major step towards understanding certain gamers' equipment proclivities.

You could start an online petition.
Things are as they are. Adjust and thrive, stay status quo and fume. I've seen fluctuations up and down, but no large, ongoing, upward trend since joining.

I'm less pissed about the discrepancy (as it is to be expected) than I am about there being one while the developers that Mac gaming is the way that it is because Apple doesn't support games. It really doesn't help the situation but it is far from the only reason.

What's sad? My gaming system cost less than his mini, and is easily twice as powerful.

Ok was a little tired at that point. It should read

And it uses all that power to do merely one thing well though admittedly it does it very well indeed.

In this case, tho, it might be. This looks like a driver issue and/or shortcoming in Apple's OpenGL implementation. Apple doesn't exactly have robust developer support for the gamemakers.
Now if Steve liked games, and/or saw them as $trategically important...
When is that Apple GaMeltDown event, again? Oh yeah, they don't have one.
Maybe they should hire Seinfeld.

I've a hunch it can do a lot more than your Mini in a number of areas. It may be optimized for gaming, but it's unlikely to be a one-trick pony.
You can do a lot with a fast CPU, lots of RAM and a good graphics card. (I know, startling concept
).

How cute, you thought I meant I had a console.
The only thing my PC doesn't do well is run OS X.
Given price/performance, Windows is an acceptable compromise.
And it's not particularly well-optimized for gaming. The video card (7900GS) is outdated and the quad-core CPU runs at a lower speed than a similar-price dual-core, but multitasks better. But it's still way more powerful than a Mini for a slightly lower price.

Re: Spore is out
This is more or less the system I have, except you can't get a 7900GS from newegg any more, and my case and power supply were scavenged.
The only problem I've had is that the motherboard only supports DDR2-667. The memory autoclocked to 800 instead, and the thing would crash like a little bitch any time I launched a game. Easy fix.
Should run Spore plenty good.

I've sees internet in next gen consoles. They do it but I'd hardly say they does it well. I've yet to see video encoding or productivity apps for them as they are. Video playback exists but you'll pay as much or more than a Mini to do better than the Mini does and then standalone video player exist that equal or exceed the Wii & 360 Po for cheaper.
As it stands, consoles mere do one thing well, it can do other things acceptably at least though.

I'll grant twice my computer but you are exaggerating more than a hair on half the price.
Should run Spore plenty good.
So would my mini if I inflicted Windows on myself. (It ain't gonna happen cause I prize my sanity too much.)

Reread. I never said it cost half, I said it cost less.

So does the DS. But it's basically a 2D version of one of the game's several phases.
