Dreamweaver's AP Div Vs. Div

Is anyone knowledgeable about AP Divs (Absolute Positioned) used in Adobe Dreamweaver vs. the regular Div tag? Is it appropriate to use them in general web design. One advantage is that they can be drawn easily in Dreamweaver just like a page-layout program. Anyone use them?

Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

Re: Dreamweaver's AP Div Vs. Div

Any div can be absolutely positioned using CSS.

I would assume that Dreamweaver uses the standard

Code:

position:absolute;
left: SOMENUMBEROFpx;
top: SOMENUMBEROFpx;

yes. you can. They are very usefull if you want a section to be always shown in the same spot, like a menu or banner.

Right, but to do an entire website using AP Divs, rather than regular Divs or tables, is that a good idea? I'm asking this because of compatibility and reliability issues among different browsers.

Re: Dreamweaver's AP Div Vs. Div

i think AP divs should be used only if you're declaring a z-index.  otherwise you can just set a width and set margin left and right to auto, float left and right , blah blah blah ....

So you use primarily regular divs for page layout, correct? What do you do for browser compatibility issues?

Re: Dreamweaver's AP Div Vs. Div

www.artoffaith.org ... my most recent. haven't had any issues with current browsers.  i no longer code for ancient browsers.  if someone wants to live in the 20th century.  that's their decision.  but i'm not going to make more work for myself by worrying about how my site is going to look in Netscape 4.  less than 1% of the browsing public.

i've found that by using a lot of divs i can control the page layout very well.  and i stay the heck away from padding.

Re: Dreamweaver's AP Div Vs. Div

Padding is the space within the outer edge of an element.

Border goes between the padding and the margin.

Margin is the space an element wants between itself and elements around it.

Nothing goes in the margins.
