So far the post-debate polling of focus groups goes to Obama.

Obama by a slight margin is my opinion.

And that's the thing that amuses me. Everybody's praising Obama as the second coming of Black Jesus, and in every step of this race he's failed to slam dunk it. He barely eked out of the primaries and barely squeezed by Hillary. He continues to barely get by. Pundits can't even say he 'won' the debate. I don't see anything that's great about this smurfing guy.

I don't like how Obama focussed on Afghanistan and Pakistan and only briefly mentioned that there are 60 countries with Al Qaeda active. He didn't say what I wanted to hear, that we need to be engaged diplomatically and economically with all of these nations.

Did he need to be explicit on that point, though?  He was fairly clear that the policy of isolating and not communicating with countries we disagree with has failed utterly, and in the case of Iran has led to strengthening influence and unfettered nuclear proliferation.   He mentioned Cuba and North Korea as other examples of the failed policy of ignoring the problem.  Wouldn't it follow that his policy of engagement would extend to other countries even if he didn't mention them by name?

Re: The Debait Thread

I also thought it was kinda boring. Maybe 'cause I'm already seeing the 'holes' in each. I didn't catch the last half hour, but what I did hear I'd call a draw.

But, McMonger repeating 3x 'Senator Obama just doesn't understand'... pissed me off.

kos has a poll up and I voted:

Poll

Of the following moments in the debate, what was your favorite?
When Obama said he had a bracelet with a soldier's name on it, too.
15%    1574 votes
When McCain stumbled over the pronunciation of President Ahmadinejad's name.
5%    544 votes
When Obama pointed out that Henry Kissinger had urged no pre-condition meetings with Iran.
7%    678 votes
When McCain said for the second time he isn't known as Miss Congeniality
3%    263 votes
When Obama said McCain was wrong, wrong, wrong about Iraq.
39%    4000 votes

When Obama reminded everyone that McCain had sung about bombing Iran.
26%    2690 votes
Something else that would have been included in any decent poll
5%    549 votes

I'm disappointed that this poll doesn't include anything about fluffy bunnies and ducklings, which are less distracting and have more relevance to the political dialogue in this country than most of the things in the poll.

I'm disappointed Obama stuck with the 'We're behind Israel, right of wrong.' idea within the debate.
I'm disappointed there's STILL no national health care.

I'm disappointed we're torturing people.
I'm disappointed we're killing people in Iraq.
I'm disappointed we're getting our own people in Iraq.
I'm disappionted the cost of heroin remains high, in spite of our military intervention in Afghanistan.

I'm disappointed that today's cars avg. less MPG than 25 years ago.

I'm disappointed about a lot of things. Being able to click on an obviously 'partisan' poll and get instant yucks is not one of them.

Yep, we need to tell Israel to stop doing things like building illegal settlements or we will start choking off their money.

I'm not disappointed by those things.  Those things make me angry.

The fact that the poll is without substance is of considerably less consequence, yet it's representative of the vapid, empty reporting that has become all we can expect of our media.  That's disappointing.

Re: The Debait Thread

I found the debate pretty underwhelming. It pissed me off when both candidates (as usual) didn't do as they were told by the moderator, and just said what they wanted to say. They were both asked several times what they would give up, or how they would adapt their policies in the wake of the financial crisis. Obama said it would definitely affect the budget, then went on to list all the things that needed money. McCain just said to cut spending and get rid of earmarks over and over again.

Both Obama and McCain called Iran's Revolutionary Guards the Republican Guards (I'm ashamed that I didn't notice it, I think Wolf on CNN pointed it out). McCain also messed up the name of the new PM of Pakistan (its Zardari, I forget what he said).

I think Obama would have done much better if he had tried confronting McCain directly. Say to him, not the audience, what he thought about something, try to pin him down a bit. Apparently he did it once (I missed that part) but he should have been doing it throughout the debate. Actually turn the thing into a real debate instead of just a stream of talking points. Oh well.

It actually impressed me that McCain admitted during the debate, in no uncertain terms, that torture had been going on.

I was wondering what Dubya et al. thought of that.

Didn't McCain change his position in regards to waterboarding?  Why wasn't he called on this?

Re: The Debait Thread

Why do Obama supporters think McCain changed his position on torture?

Or perhaps McCain doesn't like big government federalization hamstringing the military... oh just maybe?

But Republicans and the White House oppose a provision in the authorization bill that would prohibit the CIA and all other U.S. intelligence agencies from using interrogation techniques not authorized by the U.S. Army Field Manual.

The provision had not been part of the original authorization bills approved by the House and the Senate. It was inserted at the last minute by Democrats during conference negotiations as a way to extend the Army's ban on torture to intelligence agencies.

http://thegate.nationaljournal.com/2008 … thoriz.php

There is a distinct difference between banning something specifically, and banning everything not outlined.  Not surprised a a bunch of knee jerk libs wouldn't do their homework on this and  choose to call McCain a flip flopper and characterize voting against a crappy law... as voting for torture.  Pretty damn pathetic, really.

I'd love for y'all to elaborate on how McCain was "wrong on Iraq."  Specifically let me know how Obama's cut n' run bill would have improved things, and give me an update on how the surge is working out.
