Actually torture works quite well.

It gets you the responses that you want to hear. It worked very well for the Soviets, especiallyl during the trials that Stalin ordered. IT was used to great effect under his direction to elicit confessions to all sorts of things and to help implicate others.

Of course some of what these people admitted to is very unlikely.

It works well if what you want is a confession. If you go at some one long enough they'll admit what ever you want whether it's true or not. If you want reliable facts though it's far less effective because they tell you what ever they think you want to know whether it's true or not.

That's what I said. Note who I was pointing to. The Soviets didn't care about the truth, they wanted confessions. They wanted to hear what they wanted. to hear.
