Norway demands Apple open DRM

LINK

Since Apple is selling DRM free music anyway why not license Fairplay? Music DRM is dead anyway... even Walmart sells DRM free.

I can see keeping DRM on movies for now but what harm could possibly come at this point in the game ofopening Fairplay for all?

Wonder if Apple can afford to drop Norway as a market for iPods?

Unless you become as little children, there's no way you will believe this crap.

Norway — Population: 4,627,926
New York City — Population: 8,274,527

I think they can afford it. Besides, it isn't like the people from Norway that really want iPods won't get them from somewhere else. The question is can they afford it if the other European countries follow suit.

The thing that pisses me off about this is that Norway should be fighting the music companies, not Apple. Apple has already shown that they are happy to sell unrestricted music if the music companies let them. However, they have contracts with these companies and if they don't allow them to then Apple can't just sell their music unrestricted.

It seems crazy that governments are getting involved in this at all. Even if you buy an iPod no one is forcing you to buy your music from iTunes. That is what seems crazy to me.

Norway is not an EU member.

However, the article pointed out that many EU nations are supporting Norway on this so I think that is what he was referencing.

You do realize that the recording industry fantasy is "open DRM" that runs everywhere, and that they control?

An "open standard" for DRM has about the same level of benefits as an "open standard" for slave manacles and chains.  A lot, if you're the one seeking to shackle someone else.  Not so much, if you're one of the people who are in line to be shackled ...
