my mac book doesnt boot up anymore

was watching a WMV on window XP on my Macbook via Bootcamp, all of a sudden WMV stopped responding and I got that winow message telling me I need to restart my computer.

now when I restart the computer chimes once and thats it. I heard this wierd internal sound and I get a flashing folder with a question mark in the middle.

I tried to zap the ram by holding option+apple+p+r and I did get to hear the 4 chimes, but nothing changed after that.

didn't install any hardware and any new software lately.
please help.

Re: my mac book doesnt boot up anymore

Your "system" folder has not been "found."

If you have the latest Disk Warrior, use that to repair.

Or, use your "install dvd".....  Boot from the Install DVD and use one of the utilities in one of the menus to locate the "startup disk".

Or, use the install DVD to "archive and install preserving user settings" a whole new install of the system.

Or, failing that, it may be that your hard disk is in fact useless.

Re: my mac book doesnt boot up anymore

ouch, found the install dvd.
when I restart fro; either it goes straight into install mod how ever when its time to select the HD to install on I get no options.

So I guess I'm fu* .
Whats my options?
Can I replace the HD?
Should I do it my self or let she shop do it?
Will it be covered since the computer is still newish? Is it still covered if I changed the screen my self?
Is there any chance to recover the data?

Any other suggestions or thoughts?

In the USA it it covered to a year unless you got the Apple Protection plan which extends it to 3 years.

Now that said, If it is a MacBook (not a MacBook Pro) it is VERY easy to replace.

Re: my mac book doesnt boot up anymore

first things first.  hold down option when booting the mac with your restore dvd in the drive.
select apple hardware test. run that and if there is the option to do the full HD test, do it.
if you have bad blocks and try to repair a HD (with disk utility or diskwarrior) you can possibly screw it up worse.  if if has bad blocks, then you buy data-rescue and use that.  if it doesn't have bad blocks (passes) then try disk utility inside of the utility menu (when booted into the OSX installer).

this is, again, assuming the HD is not physically failing.

Re: my mac book doesnt boot up anymore

well I just gave up and decided to replace it. I actually had a 2 years warranty from the shop I bought it from but since I replaced the screen my self I didn't want to wait the 6 weeks it takes the shop to send it to apple to find out I have to pay for it. So I decided to fork out the €130 it will cost for the shop to put a new HD in.

So anyway, is there anything I should know or do to avoid allowing windows to burn my HD again? Sadly I am spending at least 90% of my time on the windows side of this computer

Thanks
