Wii HD in 3 years?

Next-gen Wii to be launched within three years
By James Sherwood

Nintendo has begun showing off a second-generation Wii that’ll be officially launched before 2011, according to gaming sources.

In a report by gaming website What They Play, “multiple sources in the game development and publishing community” have claimed that Nintendo is currently giving early presentations of its next console hardware, which has been unofficially labelled as the “Wii HD”.

The sources also said that although the new Wii will retain the same style of gameplay, its core hardware will be more powerful.

For example, as the “Wii HD” name suggests, the new console will feature “digitally distributed and backwardly compatible content”, the moles maintain. That’s in addition to some form of on-board storage, such as an internal hard disk or solid-state drive.

Do you think the graphics will looks as good at the xbox 1 did. shrug I find it hard to believe it will actually be able to compete graphics wise to the 360 and the ps3.

Likely; video tech advances faster than anything. Whatever its featureset it'll need the bandwidth to push more pixels than the first 'Box, which would only do the 480p the Wii does now, and 1080i at most.

I wonder what the games will render internally at, and how high they'll scale. Can't wait for the 360 to natively output 16x10.

You can already get better-than-RSX graphics cards for <$50, now..  Whatever's going into N's new console should be much better.

From what they're saying, it looks like they're sticking with the same basic technology, but just faster. Which means that you can probably get higher resolution textures, more polygons etc., but the same basic limitations, such as lack of shaders, will still be there. Plus I doubt that the other hardware will be that much more powerful.
