Re: FREE BEER!
btw - I like amber ale and pale ale, but I generally dislike IPA.
Maybe it's just the american versions of IPAs that I dislike.
Now - there was a really good beer imported from India that kicked ass - it had a picture of the Taj Mahal on it - not sure what it was, but it was a damn good beer whatever it was. Had it at a higher end (~ $50 a plate) Indian restaurant.

btw - supposedly that's the history of IPA - it was brewed to prevent it from skunking on the trip from England to India.
Or something like that.
It was brewed with high hops and alcohol content to prevent spoilage, not skunking. Beer was/(is) shipped in barrels, so there's no light exposure.

Ah - OK.
To me "skunk" beer is simply a beer that has gone bad.
Guess there's a more precise definition.

The definition isn't "more precise," it's the definition.

There's a definition for motor too.
But if it makes you feel superior to have known a definition I didn't - congratulations.

That's because beer doesn't really spoil anymore, with the advent of pasteurization and refrigeration.
Skunking is a reaction to light by a chemical contained in the hops. The best defense against skunking is having your beer in brown bottles, and stored away from light.
You can drink a skunked beer; it will just taste horrible. You will get sick if you drink a spoiled beer.

I wonder how long is long enough for that thing before I crack it open, pour it in the parking lot and throw the bottle in the recycle bin?

Re: FREE BEER!
Res,
The beer in question is called Taj Mahal.
It's a lager, served in just about every Indian restaurant I've been to (that had a beer license I should say, most of my favorite Inian places have a byob policy), no relation to the IPA.
Other than getting skunked -which is from getting lightstruck (most susceptable in lagers/pilsners, so I cannot fathom why they so commonly use green or even clear bottles on them-I think there are a lot of Americans who believe a good European lager is supposed to taste skunky)
Other spoilage is just from sitting around -especially after going through cycles of high and low temparatures.
This will make the beer taste and smell like old vegetable water -or wet paper bags.
Skunking will have an actually skunky odor.
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.

I knew it wasn't an IPA - but IPA is what made me think of it.
It was quite good.

Will beer get skunked if you leave it out on the patio where justine works?

Will beer get skunked simply from age?
With no light striking it (say, in a can, cask or keg, etc), it probably won't get skunked, but age wiil make the beer stale, and then spoiled -especially if the temperature fluctuates a lot.
Though certain beers -well hopped and strong ones especially, do well with aging.
Some people like to take a hoppy barleywine, or certain bottle conditioned beers and cellar it, ad the hops will mellow and the overall flavor will mature in certain ways.

No beer would be there long enough to get skunked. There are so many heavy drinkers at my company and judging by the amount of people in line for the free crap beer they serve at our quarterly meetings, they'll drink anything.

Re: FREE BEER!
Monday I finally put the bottle of Mich GDL to rest. The beer went down the drain (surprisingly foamy) and the bottle went into the recycling. That's the end of that.

I'd imagine something like that could last months in the fridge.
I know of beer geeks who cellar that stuff for 1-3 years.

Thanks for the info. Most of the beer i buy gets consumed pretty quickly so it's not a worry, but the Maudite doesn't.

Why not find somebody on the street, and offer the beer in person? If you did that, I'd take the beer in a heartbeat and even call you awesome for it. I just hate to see good beer go to waste.
