No. WE would be worse off.

Then offer them a fat bonus. But presumably the guys worth keeping are smart enough to realize their fat cat lifestyle is on hold for the time being. The entire economy is in the smurf and they're lucky to even have jobs right now.

I've seen that fat cat lifestyle up close. It's a lot of fun. But if you're not grownup enough to adjust for tough economic times, you don't deserve your job. Speaking of which, I really doubt that these guys are so irreplaceable. Let them go look for jobs elsewhere. The company they work for just went belly up. They can just act like the bailout never happened.

Try recruiting some financial guys by saying you aren't going to give them much of a salary, no bonuses, and they will be staying at the nearest Motel 6 while traveling. When they get done laughing at your face right during the interview, be sure to ask them to refer your company to their friends. They may have to be taken out on a stretcher.

Given all that's gone on, I might think the AIG folks are just happy to still have a job.

Also, don't we the people own 79 % of AIG ?  Doesn't get give us any pull with stopping the reward spending for a few quarters ?

$127 billion?! WORSE OFF HOW?

The bailout is not free, AIG will have to repay it.
If they do not have money making divisions, the chances of repaying it are greatly diminished, which would eventually result in them going out of business - with the tax payer screwed.

BLACKMAIL AGAIN!??

Or is it 'EXTORTION'??

EIther way, I'm sure you'll be able to count the angels dancing on the head of that pin. Find distinctions w/o difference, etc.

Most importantly, the ability to not see a 'smoking gun' of any sort across the spectrum of this whole messy enchilada. Ever.

It's really starting to wear on me.

Say what?

How is it either?

These employees were given a performance based bonus that they were told they would be given.
AIG had to do it, when you promise something to employees and then renege on it, you are in violation.

Yes - it's that simple.

The profits from that division more than cover the bonus those employees received.

Exactly.
This trip was paid for by the profits they made, not the tax payer bailout.
If AIG did not have them, they would be far worse off than they are.

If they're profitting in one division, THEN FUNNEL THAT MONEY INTO THE DIVISION LOSING MONEY.

Jesus...is it really that hard to understand?

Lets say you're neighbor makes $100k a year, and you make $25k a year. Suddenly, your neighbor takes a paycut. They knock on your door, and ask to borrow money to make their house payment, but they're going to need help for the next 2 years. You agree to help, and start giving them $500/month. 3 days after you gave them $500, they throw a party for all their friends, and you're not invited. They buy imported beer, brats, steaks, caviar, and give everyone an iPod...all on the house. When you ask "WTF?!", they say "well, I planned this party a month ago, and I didn't want to let my friends down because they're the best friends I've got, besides, I had saved this money for awhile now".

What would you say? Justify your imaginary neighbors behavior. Go.

radarman? tallgeese? What would you do? You certainly wouldn't expect them to CANCEL their party, would you?! I mean, c'mon...this party is for their best friends...

Would you expect your neighbor to stop paying his other bills for services rendered because you loaned him money?

That's why I'd be helping. To keep services running. But if this guy has reserves stashed elsewhere, why in gods name am I paying his bills?

I might expect him to cut down to basic cable, if any TV at all. Maybe get the 400 minute cell plan as opposed to the unlimited minutes, text, and data, and possibly go from 1.5mb DSL to 512k...so yeah, there's plenty of fat to trim. And if the "smurf" wants to throw a party with cash reserves after I've fronted him cash, then he gets cut off until he can commit to not wasting money. He should spend his reserves before he comes asking for handouts.

FINALLY! A break through!

*edit: this last part was unnecessary...so I deleted it*

Why do conservatives hate feeding the poor, but relish in handing over $700,000,000,000 to people who stole their future?

Seeing as conservatives have jesus on their side:

Mark 10:21

"And Jesus, looking upon him, loved him, and said to him, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."

I don't know about the reserves but I do know that $440,000 is .005 of 85 billion, half of 1 percent.
That's less than Congress wastes on a routine day.

What makes me sad is how we lose the point.  This is something we've never experienced.  Spa time?  C'mon.  These are dire times we've never faced - we are talking trade in your vehicle for a bike times.  LET IT SINK IN PEOPLE.  This is a transition where we must accept the realities of hard times for all and we bailed you out, we as taxpayers deserve a level of respect for bailing out AIG.  I paid for a pedicure?  It makes me vomit.  Services RENDERED?  Be happy you have a job, go somewhere else, go, but look in the mirror first and stare at those tiny pores from your facial I bought for you first and see if you still have a conscience.

Re: AIG execs get $440k trip to spa

This is insane.

A company does such a bad job that they go out of business. Yet somehow they're so essential to the economy that tax payers have to bail them out. And not only do we have to bail them out, we also have to pay for their vacations because if we don't everyone will quit and they'll go out of business. Plus now that we've given them money, they've got us over a barrel because if they fail we'll never get paid back. So where's the incentive for them to be successful, let alone frugal? If this is the logic that justifies their spa trip, they should be demanding even more money from us to fund even more nonsense. How about a tax-payer supplied pony for each of their kids? We better get around soon to organizing the AIG $300/plate BBQ, or else how are we ever going to get our investment back?

Let's say the school you teach at doesn't meet NCLB requirements and everyone is punished.
Your kids all got straight A's in your class because you did your job well but you get punished along with the others that didn't do theirs.
How would you feel about this?
