Yes, and they've had low-level workers prosecuted before.

I know little about the group and anyone who is filling out fraudulent forms should be prosecuted.  Ultimately the group has the be responsible for their employees' actions.  There doesn't yet seem to be any evidence that this was a plot to influence elections, but I wouldn't rule it out.

I don't think election fraud is confined to any particular political ideology--however, I do believe that vote caging and suppression is more likely to come from individuals on the right.

Re: Voter fraud

I guess this thread should be re-labeled as "registration fraud" as opposed to "voter fraud" shouldn't it? confused

Seems also that the organization in question was reporting the fraud as opposed to the insinuation that it was encouraging it, is that correct?

Isn't Fitzgerald the guy who went after Scooter? Holy hannah (barbera), we might just get a Fitzmas and frogmarching yet.

Actually it does bring up an interesting point. Why are so few news organizations following this story? Maybe they're in the tank for Obama?

There's this: ACORN's canvassers filled out forms with fake names, addresses, officials say (I didn't know the starting lineup of the Dallas cowboys lived in Nevada!)
or this
Missouri officials suspect fake voter registration (We must make sure every vote counts, sometimes multiple times!)

or this

HOW ACORN GOT ME INTO VOTE SCAM ("They will follow you to the buses, they will follow you home, it doesn't matter", "You can tell them you're registered as many times as you want - they do not care,")

etc etc. Now across at least 7 states, and everywhere its ACORN. At the very least they are extremely sloppy with their voter drive, but there is definitely growing evidence that there is potentially more than that.

You're right, but most presidential candidates aren't in bed with the hucksters. It would be really interesting if Obama gives his acceptance speech from inside Cook County Jail. Maybe he could get the Blues Brothers to open for him.

There isn't an Obama connection to this story.

etc etc. Now across at least 7 states, and everywhere its ACORN. At the very least they are extremely sloppy with their voter drive, but there is definitely growing evidence that there is potentially more than that.

Is there?  Perhaps you've read something that I haven't, but I hadn't seen anything other than fake/multiple registration forms.

From the WSJ:

t's far from clear that the number of suspicious registrations is enough to affect the outcome of the presidential vote, even in tight states, elections officials say. They say enforcement efforts are likely to spot any big collections of fake registrations before votes are cast. What's more, a fake registration doesn't necessarily mean an ineligible vote is tallied. Officials say canvassers sometimes make up registered names to impress bosses or earn bonuses, but that doesn't result in anyone ineligible casting a vote.

Acorn is a frequent target of Republican voter-fraud allegations, and it had workers in two states last year convicted of submitting fake registrations. Acorn says it works hard to root out bad apples. A sign at the organization's office here reads: "Anyone committing fraud will be reported to the Bureau of Elections, prosecuted and terminated immediately."

Acorn's quality-control manager at the office, Bianca Brown, says employees check each application and have a call center attempt to confirm the information with applicants. She says such reviews caught a person who registered as Batman and another who has tried to register 70 times. Acorn says it has fired about 80 workers in New Mexico since December 2007 over potentially fraudulent registrations.

New Mexico law requires Acorn to turn in all applications, no matter how suspicious-looking, within 48 hours. Elections officials do their own quality control on registrations, but Acorn officials say their own process helps the government save time.

Link.

Again, any illegal activity needs to be uncovered and prosecuted--but the suggestion that Obama's campaign is involved is laughable.

Re: Voter fraud

ACORN certainly hasn't done anything to help its reputation.

Still, it sounds as if they often discover this stuff on their own (and it appears that the law in at least some places only allows a very limited amount of time for application collectors to hold onto those applications before turning them in to election officials).

Still, I don't see evidence that this is part of some sort of devious plot.  What's the angle?  Dozens of obviously false cards, some bearing identical addresses and false names?  Some simply duplicates?  Perhaps the idiots the have working for them got caught up in the numbers game (or were just to lazy to actually go out and do their job), but I don't see how this was going to translate into extra votes.

Re: Voter fraud

Over TPM Josh Marshall has a lengthy deconstruction and description about the whole brouhaha. Which includes this passage:

I've always had questions about whether this is a good way to do voter registration. And Democratic campaigns usually keep their distance. But here's the key. This is fraud against ACORN. They end up paying people for registering more people then they actually signed up. If you register me three times to vote, the registrar will see two new registrations of an already registered person and the ones won't count. If I successfully register Mickey Mouse to vote, on election day, Mickey Mouse will still be a cartoon character who cannot go to the local voting station and vote. Logically speaking there's very little way a few phony names on the voting rolls could be used to commit actual vote fraud. And much more importantly, numerous studies and investigations have shown no evidence of anything more than a handful of isolated cases of actual instances of vote fraud.
