Yahoo hacker caught

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/ye … alin1.html

OCTOBER 8--A Tennessee man has been indicted for hacking into the e-mail account of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. David Kernell, 20, was charged with illegally accessing Palin's Yahoo! account "by researching and correctly answering a series of personal security questions," according to an indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Knoxville. A copy of the indictment can be found below. After accessing Palin's account, Kernell allegedly changed its password to "popcorn" and made screenshots of the account's directory as well as certain messages, photos, and "other personal information." Those screenshots eventually were widely distributed online. If convicted of the felony charge, Kernell, an economics major at the University of Tennessee, faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Kernell, whose father is a Democratic state representative in Tennessee, turned himself in this morning to law enforcement authorities and is scheduled to be arraigned later today. (3 pages)

Re: Yahoo hacker caught

I heard Hannity(?) the other day bitching about this as if it were sponsored by or sanctioned by the DNC.  And here it turns out to be some smurf with too much time on his hands.

At least the kid is rich, and politically connected. There's a good chance his daddy will be able to cut a deal.

Had he been some poor suburbanite slob, he might as well have gone ahead and scheduled the corrective surgery for his backside.

Who's dad is a prominent democrat in politics. Its not simply some kid with too much time on his hands. It doesn't mean that therefore its a big democratic plot going all the way to obama's campaign, but neither is the fact that his dad is  a prominent dem inconsequential.

Pick a state other than your own--there are a couple of gimmes (Alaska and Tennessee) which have been in the news recently, so leave them out. Now name any member of that state's legislature.

Hell, most people would have trouble naming the state legislator(s) for their own district(s).

Define "insignificant."

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

By that I meant he's not the volunteer that an organizer hired last week and is doing data entry on a pc or calling potential voters to get the word out. He's not a nobody.

Re: Yahoo hacker caught

...was indicted on a charge of accessing a computer without authorization and entered a plea of not guilty in U.S. District Court today.  He was released on his own recognizance but is ordered back in court on Dec. 2 with a trial set for Dec. 16. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

As part of his release, a few other restrictions were imposed. Here’s where it gets good:

    * A ban on owning a computer.
    * Restriction of Internet use to e-mail and college coursework only.
    * No contact with Gov. Palin or her family
    * No travel outside eastern Tennessee without approval from a probation officer.

No, he's not a nobody.  He's a democratic state rep....in Tennessee.  To call him a "prominent democrat in politics" is to rob the word "prominent" of all meaning, unless you're asserting that every elected politician is "prominent in politics."  Is every elected democratic politician a "prominent" democrat?  If so, the label really does mean little.

He's a named player. certainly not in the upper echelon, but not a nobody. It was distinguishing between an elected official say, and some shmo volunteer. I'll freely agree that a state representative is not as big as say a senator or governor, but its not chump change either.

Re: Yahoo hacker caught

From a tech/security perspective, the takeaway from this hack is to provide an answer that is completely unrelated to the security question.

Re: Yahoo hacker caught

Seems like a public service to me. Because, indeed, she was subverting public records law. The ol' Rove circumvent the intent via 'private' service.

Obviously, the Chinese, or even the 'just outside my window' Russians could have done it, if this accused didn't .

Re: Yahoo hacker caught

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co … id=topnews

Palin's gubernatorial calendar, obtained by The Washington Post under the Alaska Public Records Act, adds to the understanding of Palin as a political phenomenon, a governor from an obscure state who exploded onto the national stage after just 21 months in office. While many factors played a role in Palin's rise, including her background in broadcast journalism and the appeal of her life story, she also benefited from expert counsel on how to take her message to a national audience.

Palin made energy a priority as she took office in December 2006. Much of her time was devoted to discussions of a proposed 1,700-mile pipeline that would deliver natural gas from the North Slope of Alaska to the lower 48 states. The issue had long been controversial, but Palin vowed to tackle it without making too many concessions to oil companies. Her first contact with Washington came on Jan. 17, 2007, when the vice president called her to discuss the project, the calendar shows.

An interesting read. About PR. However, I thought this a salient quote. So, if she had a 'private' say iCal on .Mac, I'd call that fair game to 'explore'.

The phone call with Unit2 leads me think she knows a bit more about being Unit2 than she's let on.

"Also!"
