2008 Final Debate thread
T -5 hrs until the final debate of the 2008 US Presidential campaign.
We've all heard Obama dare Johnnyboy to man up and say it to his face, and Johnnyboy's indicated that he intends to do so. I'm not sure I buy it though -- Johnnyboy is boxed into a corner according to the polls. His base is all he has left and they demand to be fed blood. However, independents are decidedly not buying into the Ayers BS during a financial panic, and want answers about the economy.
So will he or won't he, and if he does bring up Ayers doesn't that rather seal his fate? It's kind of a win-win for Obama in a perverse way.
Bring it on, whitey!
ps: ***BREAKING*** CNN just moved Virginia from "battleground" to "lean Obama" as a new poll shows him leading there now by TEN points. whew!

Re: 2008 Final Debate thread
I can't see how McCain bringing up Ayers can do anything but blow up in his face (no pun intended...).
The connection itself is laughably tenuous, not to mention it'll just make him look petty and desperate, which is how his past character attacks in the debates came off.

Re: 2008 Final Debate thread
McCain's whole premise on the Ayers thing--that Obama simply referred to him as a 'guy in the neighborhood,' and that's untrue--is a complete distortion of what Obama actually said at that debate. It might work at a rally, but I'll be interested to see how it does anything here. Poll after poll has demonstrated that McCain is taking a hit because of these attacks. It will smack of desperation.

Yes, but if he does NOT bring it up won't the wingnuts explode? They're already mad that Rev. Wright and Rezko are locked in the basement.

Re: 2008 Final Debate thread
Of course the questions that McCain's remaining supporters should ask themselves is: if Ayers is so important, why didn't McCain bring him up in the second debate?

Re: 2008 Final Debate thread
Regardless of Ayers, what is the criteria for a McCain win at this point? Seems like he could get a win just by not being a dick, which in turn could give him some momentum for the last few weeks of this thing.

I suspect he feels it's necessary to obtain the proper penetration in swing states.

Re: 2008 Final Debate thread
I think it's going to be difficult for McCain to gain any momentum from the debate unless Obama screws something up really good, which is unlikely.

If this sort of thing is any indication I think conservatives are in the process of giving up on McCain and going into "triage mode".

Would make great TV if Senator McCain loses his temper.
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Like I said: "triage mode" -- RNC pulling out of both Wisconsin and Maine. Now, wouldn't a smart campaign announce this the day AFTER the last debate, not hours before it when all of the talking heads are yapping?

And how long until its leaked that Gov. Palin wanted to stay in those states and fight ?

Republicans shifting from winning the election to blaming Obama for all of their smurf starting in January?

I think the only chance McCain has if salvaging any dignity is to go full bore nuts. I mean send him for observation crazy. If he is touched in the head, he can say the things that not saying will label him a coward while it not being because he's just an smurf. I mean how can he be responsible for his action while's having an attack of the crazies.

I think something very weird will transpire. It'll be either The WhiteHair frothing, or a very out of bounds accusation. If I had to guess - drugs or another terrorista.

I think McCane will participate in a calm civil debait and wrap his candidacy up right nicely.

Re: 2008 Final Debate thread
My hope: McCain will decide to keep it clean(ish). I think he's probably doing the math and realizing it's pretty much impossible to win at this point. It would be decidedly mavericky to tell the crazy base to get smurfed.
