Re: Bought a new MB or MBP? Let us know about them.

Mine is one of the April '04 revisions.

It works well enough most things, but I'm still about ready for something new (I also still have my g4 cube set up, but I don't use it too often).

Okay, who's got a MBP? I'm still interested in how quiet they are.

Re: Bought a new MB or MBP? Let us know about them.

Ordered the new MacBook for my wife. It should be here by Friday. I'm really hoping it gets here by Friday so she can enjoy it over the weekend. I'll post some details once I get it and get it set up. I'm really looking forward to it for a number of reasons. Not only will she be able to enjoy all of the websites that cause her current PB to limp along but she will be able to enjoy new things, like watching the slingbox from the sunroom.

BTW, I got the $1299 model. In the end the only thing I wanted in the $1599 model that I feel I sacrificed was the backlit keyboard. I really hate that Apple treats that as a premium feature, especially with the black keys. I think the LED backlit screen might be bright enough to see the keys in most conditions.

Well I am quite disappointed.  The kensington lock is supposed to lock the battery door shut.  All it does is make it more difficult to open the battery door (on the 13" at least).  Maybe that slight deterrent will scare HD and battery thieves away.

That is a bit disappointing, especially if you are using these in a lab environment. I'm actually not that worried about someone stealing my hard drive and/or battery because I don't leave it sitting by itself in public. However, it does make it easier for someone that steals your entire laptop to swap the hard drive before selling it.

Re: Bought a new MB or MBP? Let us know about them.

Just got mine yesterday! I've had 4 iBooks, 3 PowerBooks and 1 MacBook Pro and this new MB is by far my favorite of them all! I loaded it with 4 gigs of RAM and 320 gig HD... I have to say it REALLY feels like a quality piece of hardware!

Wooohooo!

My only disappointment is that you no longer have an Apple key sad Farewell Apple key....say hi to clarus for me.

Re: Bought a new MB or MBP? Let us know about them.

I saw the Macbooks at the local Apple Store last Saturday.   They sure do look good.  Very good build quality.  Congratulations on your new purchases.  I'm not sure that I will get enough of a difference if I buy one as opposed to the Macbook I already have.  The new 15 in, I would notice the difference.  Not sure I want to spend that much money though.  Maybe a refurb 15.  It's not as sexy as the new ones but it would be an improvement for me.

So are the old MBPs (or the new MBPs for that matter, if you have one) quiet or noisy?

No Apple key?  When did that happen?  How do you do keyboard shortcuts?

Re: Bought a new MB or MBP? Let us know about them.

AT has its in-depth review up.

Apple's Redesigned MacBook and MacBook Pro: Thoroughly Reviewed
Apple introduced significant aesthetic changes to its MacBook and MacBook Pro lines, in addition to...

On a quick once-over I see no mention of noise, but predictably there are two fans on the Pro (the 9600M needs one). That could raise noise a bit. Also (and somewhat contrary to some comments/ speculation so far)

Apple gives you the option of switching between the two GPUs in the Energy Saver preference pane; unfortunately you have to log out and log back in to switch between the dGPU and mGPU. Other PC implementations of Hybrid Power (what NVIDIA calls the ability to turn off the dGPU and rely on just the mGPU) aren't so clumsy and can be done from within Windows, but for whatever reason Apple requires a logout/login.

My 17" MBP is very quiet. It is the quietest computer I've ever owned. The fans usually run at 2000 rpms. You can not hear them at that speed unless you put your ear right next to the computer. When you are doing something very intensive they will speed up and then you can hear them.

The key is still there, it just doesn't have an Apple on it. It has the abbreviation cmd and the clover symbol.

Mine is almost silent when doing basic stuff like being online, for example. You will hear the fans if doing more intensive stuff like encoding video, 3D gaming, etc. This is on a 2nd gen, 2.16GHz MBP.

My old 12" PowerBook ran mostly silent as well.

I think I'm going to order a new battery and hard drive for my CD 1.83 and hold out for Nehalem next year. Still, the new ones look rather nice and are tempting.

Macs originally didn't have the Apple symbol on the Command key. It only appeared after the Apple IIgs was introduced, which had ADB ports and consequently used the same keyboards as Macs.

Nice call on the IIgs. I was a little confused by the way you laid this out though. The IIgs introduced the ADB port in 1986 and it was eventually added to the Mac SE and Mac II in 1987. Is that what you meant?

What I mean is, that ever since Apple's keyboards were usable with both the Apple II series (which had Apple keys) and the Macintosh line (which had Command keys), the command key bore both the Apple and Command symbols.

That some people erroneously started using phrases like "Apple-V" instead of "Command-V" for Mac keyboard shortcuts, hardly changes the fact that the Mac never had an Apple key, originally.

I was only responding because your original statement made the ordering sound wrong when I read it. It sounded as if the IIgs got its keyboard from the Mac, and not the other way around.

Gotcha!  Well, not to make you more sad but my wife's new MacBook is here. I'll be unpacking it and setting it up as soon as my 3:00 meeting is finished. It is hard to resist opening the box right now. You should have seen how big the box was that Amazon shipped it in. It was hilarious.
