Maybe I need some 'Air'?

Hi forum friends,

I'm at a crossroads, my trusty Powerbook G4 17" has been good to me for the most part but i think hes a little tired now and needs to be retired.  I want to buy something refurbished, either the cheapest 24" iMac ($1349CAN) or the cheapest Macbook Air ($1439CAN).  I have very different reasons for wanting both of these macs and I was hoping you guys could throw in your two cents to maybe help guide my course.

iMac - I'm a student (BScN) and don't go out much, what leisure time I do have I spend fooling around in photoshop CS2, watching movies and (very) infrequently firing up Neverwinter Nights.  The iMac is conducive to late night studying with its nice big screen and peppy processor, this to me seems to be the practical approach.

Air - I love the styling of the Air, as a notebook I think its reached design nirvana.  All this thing would be to me is a mobile word-processor/email/surfing device.  I'd probably keep my G4 for its bigger screen for home use, the Air would be ideal for taking notes in lectures too.  Much more of a luxury computer, but also it facilitates better study habits by allowing access to online content while at school/on the go and note taking in lectures.

My Powerbook is chained to my desk since the battery lasts a whopping 25 minutes and it is way too heavy to be lugging it around on its own regardless of textbooks so I'll probably sell it locally when I do have a new Mac (like I said, maybe with the Macbook Air).

So what do you guys say?  I know I'll get a performance boost from either of these machines but how much would the Air with a 1.6Ghz C2D and 2GB RAM stack up against my 1.5Ghz 1.5GB G4 Powerbook?

thanks for any comments (except those which are completely sarcastic)

I, too, have a 17" PowerBook G4 (1.33 GHz, 1440x900 model).  I recently bought a new battery and a 2GB RAM upgrade for it from OWC.  For a total of $220USD, it was much cheaper than buying a new machine, and I think there's some life in this yet.

Honestly, I would avoid buying the Air unless you're on the go with your laptop a lot. It just isn't worth the compromises otherwise.

True, that.

It makes a good mobile companion to a full featured workstation. On it's own, it's just a low powered piece of pretty aluminum.

Not to say that Air is a bad machine, but it is a bit of a niche product. In addition to less CPU power, it has limited RAM and a slow HD.

The new MacBook OTOH would be a way to split the difference.

Re: Maybe I need some 'Air'?

Thanks for the replies guys.  I'm willing to take the performance hit with the Air in lieu of any other notebook (except maayybee the HP mininote 2133) but the only other Mac I would consider would be the 24" iMac.  I also should have added I won't be missing hte optical drive since the superdrive in my PB crapped out a few months after I bought it off ebay (I was using an iBook G4 I picked up dirt cheap but it recently got a neat green paint job and was given to my girlfriend).  Has anyone heard about the screens in the 24" iMacs blacking out for no reason?  I think I read an article about that a little while ago, also considering a macbook Air would be running a more sophisticated (bloated) OS (leopard vs. tiger on my PB) will the performance boost from higher specs be negligible or noticeable?

thanks again big_smile

Ah, but it'll get you stopped at Airport Security across the country when the Transit Stopping Authority official doesn't believe it's a real computer.  "There's no CD drive and there's something in it that looks weird on X ray.  Where's the Hard Drive?"

It is seriously pretty, though.

The non air macbooks actually have a smaller foot print.  So all you are gaining is thinness and at 0.32 inches difference compared to the last gen or 0.19 inches differntce compared to the new gen. So all your getting is a status symbol. Is 0.19 inches that important to you?

2.66Ghz QuadCore-Nehalem w/24"LED CD ---2.2Ghz BlackMB---15" 2.4Ghz MBP(work)
Dual 2.3Ghz G5 (4G Ram, 2x 250G HD)(10.5 server)--- 400Mhz G4 PM (10.4 Server)
1.5GHz Powerbook---1.6Ghz G5 iMac

If you can leave the optional external optical drive at home, the Air is at least 1.5 pounds lighter than any of the other current Mac notebooks.  The form factor and weight make it just that much closer to the profile of a real (paper) notebook, as opposed to the profile of a small brick.

Re: Maybe I need some 'Air'?

Thanks for all the input (and possible prank turned imprisonment idea), I think I will go with a Macbook Air once January rolls around and I get the other half of my student loans.  My logic being that I want a computer that will make me more productive and the Air will do just that by limiting me.  With the iMac I would be tooling around trying to squeeze every drop of performance from it to justify the purchase, with the Air its just for the looks so sitting on my desk it will be justifying its price tag.  Thanks again.

Yeah, I just bought a new battery with a higher capacity than Apple's original. I can now go almost 4 hours with the screen set to mid and Airport & Bluetooth active on my 15" MBP. (I already upgraded the ram to 2GB last year.)

The new battery has breathed new life into this machine. I still love it. When things start to get noticeably slower is when I usually upgrade and that's not even close to the case as of yet.
