New MacBook took a tumble… will I need a new hard drive?

I ordered a new MacBook Pro within minutes of it becoming available on Apple.com/store. On Friday I was showing it off and some smurf dropped it on its side, leaving a sizable dent around the ExpressCard slot. I'm taking it to my local Apple Store today and I'm not expecting to hear good news. I know AppleCare doesn't cover cosmetic damage that's self inflicted, and an AppleCare rep estimated a cost of $250-400 to fix the dent. However, I'm also noticing another issue. When the MacBook experiences any sudden movement, the needle disengages, as it likely did before, but I can now hear a clicking sound when I do it. The hard drive doesn't make any other sort of sounds, which is good, and the disk checks out fine in Disk Utility (S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified.) So when I bring the laptop in tomorrow, I think I'll have them check out the hard drive, but even if they say it's working fine, does it make sense to have them replace it? In other words, could it be working fine today and be dead tomorrow?

Thanks in advance,
David

I'd replace the drive and present the person with the bill.  Small claims court if necessary.

Drop someones computer you should expect to pay for the damages you do. Which is why smart people don't play around with a laptop not on a table or lap.

Re: New MacBook took a tumble… will I need a new hard drive?

I've obviously learned my lesson here. Going forward, I'll treat my Macbook like the $2800 (now $3200) piece of equipment that it is. I just got so used to my Pismo that I could literally throw into my backpack and not have to worry about.

If they tell me my hard drive could benefit from being replaced, does doing the replacement myself void my AppleCare? It looks easy enough to do, and god knows I've swapped hard drives on much more complicated computers. And since I could get a Seagate Momentus 7200.3, which is faster than the Hitachi I currently have in here, for about $120, I'm guessing that Apple won't offer me a better deal. Is there any incentive to letting them replace it?

With the MBP replacing your hard drive would void the warrantee.

Really? Replacing the hard drive voids all of AppleCare?
It's just slightly more work than replacing the battery. Does that void AppleCare too?

Doh the place I was reading had a picture of the new one ... but all the info was for the old one.

By all means replace it your self. (unless they are going to replace it free of charge with a new (free) hard drive.)

I get everything I can at OWC (macsales.com)

Seems like anything involving opening the case yourself would void AppleCare.

Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

Unless you become as little children, there's no way you will believe this crap.

Yeah, but the new MacBooks have that little "bum-flap" if you will, with stupid easy access to the battery and hard drive. It would make sense that AppleCare wouldn't cover any new hard drive I buy myself (although that would be backed by a 5 year Seagate limited warrantee) but given how easy it is to replace a hard drive, I don't see how doing so could possibly void my warranty.

It seems my issues with this computer are multiplying by the day. As of twenty minutes ago, my AC adapter makes a whining/buzzing sound, which would be unrelated the fall, since it didn't go down with the computer. Surely AppleCare would cover this power adapter, right?

Dude, the more you talk about this the more it sounds to me like the dude just bought himself a slightly used computer.

Re: New MacBook took a tumble… will I need a new hard drive?

I took everything to the genius bar. I was there for about two hours, since my genius had to go over every minute detail of the procedure with a trainee. He was estimating that it would cost about $600 to fix. I told him that I had been told between $250 and $400 on the phone, and he said that he would see if they had the needed parts at the store, since it's cheaper to not have to send the computer out to Cupertino or Austin or wherever they send it. They didn't have the parts, so he ended up making the service free. I guess he felt bad that everything had taken so long and that offsite repairs would be more expensive and maybe he took pity on me. In any event, I was told a fixed MacBook Pro would be arriving in seven to ten days.

Apparently the hard drive is fine. I swore to him that I didn't hear the clicking of the hard drive needle disengaging before the MacBook fell, but he assured me that since the hard drive checked out fine in his tests, if it did fail, AppleCare would cover it. He just told me to back up frequently just in case. He also said that the AC adapter may buzz when it's plugged into an outlet that's on a dimmer. I didn't realize it had been, but he was right, it was on a dimmer. The strange thing is, the dimmer was all the way up.

In any event, when my MacBook returns in a week or so, I want it to be well protected. I want something rigid and durable, but not too big to fit in a backpack. I like the Hardsleeve from Axio, but a sales rep told me that the current solutions do not fit the new MacBook Pros and that they are working on a solution for a new one, but right now it has an unknown ETA. This probably isn't the right forum to ask about protective cases for MacBooks. Where might I have better luck asking?

Either here or portables.

Sorry about the trouble with your new machine.

Hey, no worries. I'm thrilled I just got away with a slap on the wrist.
