A really nice election day

Yes - this belongs here, nothing political.

I went to go vote, this time it was at the local church instead of the local Free Masons chapter.
Before I voted, I went to go get a soda pop - which required walking past the church. Several other people walking to vote smiled and waved. It occasionally happens, but not often anymore.

Blockbuster was closed (they don't open until 10 I guess) so I had to go all the way to Raley's to get my soda. This involved crossing a street where you have to be careful, because people make right on red all the time without stopping, looking left to see if there is traffic, too stupid to figure out that a walk sign means someone pressed a button and wants to cross.

A car came before I even had hit the button to get the walk signal, had the right of way, but stopped and waved me across - and smiled a friendly smile at me.

In the grocery store, the Raley's clerks are always nice. So I guess they don't count, that's the norm. But someone with a grocery cart full of groceries saw I only had a drink and demanded I get in line in front of them.

I left Raley's and went back to the church to vote. Again - an unusual number of people smiled and gave me a friendly wave. People I didn't know. Some were coming from voting (had the sticker), some were walking their dog, it just was a friendly day.

After casting my ballot - I decided I wanted to take Starbucks up on their free Coffee for those that voted. The closest starbucks is about a 2 mile walk. Again - cars were pedestrian friendly the entire way. A woman jogging from behind me, after she passed me, turned around to jog backwards so she could say hi. I'm not kidding.

At the starbucks, they had a sign up saying "We apologize about the free coffee thing, everyone gets a free coffee, whether you voted or not" - guess there were some complaints about that, I know some religious groups don't ever vote, etc. - and even though I don't like Starbucks as a corp, it was nice of them to accommodate them.

Everyone was nice inside starbucks as well. The baristas were friendly, and to be honest - the baristas in that starbucks are rarely friendly, that's one of the things I miss about Bad Ass Coffee. But they were super busy yet friendly to everyone.

I didn't get the free coffee, that apparently only applied to regular coffee - not latte, and I really felt like a latte. But that's OK. Then I realized I didn't bring any cash, and I hate using credit card for such a small purchase - businesses have to pay a transaction fee. So I bought a really nice thermos mug @ $19.95 - it's a really nice one, and I don't have a really nice one. She gave me the latte for free for buying the mug, but put her finger up on her lips - so I guess she wasn't suppose to.

On the walk home - again, cars were pedestrian friendly - a UPS truck that had the right of way stopped and waved me across.

I don't know what it is - but everybody was just super nice today. At least so far.
Last night we had an awesome lightning and thunder storm, and now - it's sunny and perfect outside temperature.
Maybe the rain cleaned the air or something.

Anyway - I'm having a really nice day, so it's only fair for me to wish you all a very nice day.

I would feel like I woke up in an alternate universe if I had a day like that. It would probably scare the crap out of me!

That said, I'm glad you are having a good day.

Re: A really nice election day

That's funny, cuz when I went to vote today, a lot of people looked happy. The lady behind me was a little giddy even. I guess it's just the excitement.

Normally people in my area are civil to each other, but not 50s sitcom nice to each other. So it was a little 'parallel reality' for me too.

The reason I was kinda excited about today is that Virginia is a battleground state for the first time in decades, and Northern Virginia is going to be influential in helping decide who gets Virginia's electoral votes.

Re: A really nice election day

Maybe everybody is excited about all the negative divisive campaign spin coming to an end.

That would be my guess.

That and nobody is going to have a rough day at work since pretty much everybody is going to be F5-ing the political news instead of actually working.

People around me have been... well... a little more relaxed today too.

Well, I hope you all voted properly. After all Wilke needs all the votes he can get.

Re: A really nice election day

I spent about an hour today fixing something on my car, then ran off to vote.  One of my old high school friends was  working the sign in table, so, we chatted for a bit (there was no line).  I voted, and went home.

Re: A really nice election day

On the free coffee from Starbucks: under federal election laws it is illegal to have any promotional item even if it is just encouraging people to vote. It doesn't matter if there is no other political message toward a candidate or an issue behind it, which is why Starbucks has changed it to a free coffee to anyone.

Likewise Ben & Jerry's is also having a free scoop promotion at its stores today but it is limited to 3 hours this evening. Originally they planned on having the promotion for those who voted.

Starbucks sucks, even if it's free.

Re: A really nice election day

this is absolutely true...

i left the house this morning to go vote, and it was quite cloudy and dreary outside. when i left the polling place, the sun had burst through the clouds.

without outrightly divulging my choice, it was a nice reminder/metaphor that i fought the good fight for my candidate.

suck it, trebek.

I refuse to buy coffee that cost that much more than gasoline.
especially when the premium gas tastes better.

I got mine at Burger King this morning, so even SBs would be an improvement.

But it was $0.79, and holy hell am I awake now!

Re: A really nice election day

Today was like one of those fly dreams
Didn't even see a berry flashing those high beams
No helicopter looking for a murder
Two in the morning got the Fatburger
Even saw the lights of the Goodyear Blimp
And it read Pottymouth's a pimp
Drunk as hell but no throwing up
Half way home and my pager still blowing up
Today I didn't even have to use my A.K.
I got to say it was a good day.
