Re: Anyone here have a Kindle?
Yup. I believe you can use all the free stuff from Project Gutenberg on the Kindle, etc.
I guess you just can't use Amazon ebooks on other devices. But you can definitely use many non-Amazon ebooks on the Kindle.
Why isn't anything raisin-flavored?

Re: Anyone here have a Kindle?
Is there DRM-free non-public domain content available for purchase somewhere that can be put on the Kindle? Modern books, textbooks, etc? Also, doesn't it cost money just to put your own stuff on a Kindle?

The first issue is a question for publishers. I believe the answer is no.
As for the second, Amazon charges for the download, not the conversion. Amazon will do the conversion on their servers for free, and email you the file. You use your own PC's USB port to upload new books. If you have Amazon convert and transmit, it's like 10 cents.
It's actually not a bad model - it's just the opening price that is a bit of a sticky point.

Re: Anyone here have a Kindle?
The one thing I'm hoping for is a nice clean way to compile LaTeX documents for kindle use (may already be possible via tex4ht).
That would allow some authors to easily make their work readily available.
One possibility is to typeset the document so that the PDF matches the kindle screen perfectly, then the Amazon PDF conversion should work without a hitch. I'm interested to know how it handles fonts embedded in the pdf though.
Does Amazon have a software kindle that can be used to test how it handles this kind of stuff before you buy the hardware?
