gotta' dog

hooray! along with our recent home purchase (worldwide financial crisis be damned), i went and got a dog yesterday!

she came from the Elmore County Humane Shelter (which is sadly WAY overrun). she's a gorgeous, quirky little Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler mix, about six or seven months old. we've taken to her quite quickly, and vice versa. she and the cat, Mr. Sullivan, are getting along... well, they're ok. haven't seen any claws drawn or teeth bared, so we're good for right now.

yay shelter dogs!

Re: gotta' dog

Absolutely excellent!
Shelter and rescue dogs are the best and Cattle dogs will keep ya busy if my observation is any guide.
Good job, taking in a shelter dog is a wonderful action. You just rescued that beastie from the machine and that is something to be proud of.

Re: gotta' dog

i'm hoping she'll try and herd the cat at some point. that would be excellent. she seems to have that herding instinct when we're out on walks (and i'm not kidding, i just realized that was what her behavior must be as i was typing this).

Re: gotta' dog

My friend had a Blue Heeler and it was a great dog.  I've always had a shepherd or a beagle of some sort.  I have a Pocket Beagle now named Gunner.  Best dog I've ever had.

Re: gotta' dog

When I get Niko a companion next summer, it's definitely going to be a local shelter dog. Niko's breeder offered me a free pup for rehoming her, but I just can't do that. Good on you for getting a shelter baby! I hope she's everything you want her to be smile

Re: gotta' dog

Aussies are great dogs. Very insistent herders, but if you train them firmly, you shouldn't have a problem. Just be consistent.

We have a miniature Aussie, and she's a couch potato, loves her comfort, but is always up for a romp or walk. And she's a goof.

Re: gotta' dog

Awesome dog!  Our last dog was an Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler mix and she loved to herd people, birds, cows, cats, etc.  Our current dog is a purebred Australian Cattle Dog, and he loves to sleep.  He will run around if you get him going, but he seems to prefer a soft warm bed.  We got him from the shelter about 5 years ago when he was 3.  Previous owners beat him and then got rid of him when he turned on them.

I'm glad to see your cat doesn't mind him.  Many cats and dogs simply won't get along no matter how hard you try.

Re: gotta' dog

And I'll throw in my new puppy to the mix as well.  Pic is about 3 months ago, he's pushing 75 pounds now, with another 15-25 to go.  I love big dogs.

Congrats on the new cutie!

I'll throw in my shelter friend, Frank, who I have come to call Mr. Sinatra.  Here he is relaxing on election night.

Re: gotta' dog

Congrats on the dawg & house!

We just bought a house 2 montghs ago -still getting situated (just every room desparately needed repainting).
Our first home purchase. Yikes.

On the adgenda for springtime is getting a pup.
Wife and I have been together 18 years as of yesterday (married 11 as of Dec), but have never had a pet together.
She never had a pet, I had several growing up (dogs & cats).
My soon-t0-be 2 year old daughter is crazy about dogs (calls them all "puppy" and sings songs about them). My 4 year old son used to be crazy about dogs , but grew indifferent -slightly afraid of them over time.

Planning on a rescue dog, young, possibly puppy, along the lines of some type of retriever mix, hopefully only about 50lbs when grown.
I'd like a cat or two also -so they all keep each other company when we aren't home.

All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.

Re: gotta' dog

Congrats on the new dog, rescue dogs always seem to know that you saved them and love you back all that much more.  Last November my wife and I adopted our first dog from a rescue foundation specializing in unwanted farm dogs, he was 16 weeks old and really sick and underweight when we brought him home.  One year later I am happy to say he's in perfect health and now weighs over 80lbs.  We were told he was a Black Lab and Border Collie mix, as it turns out he is actually half Lab and half Greyhound and loves to run like hell...fitting as his name is Rocket.

The day we brought him home:

Re: gotta' dog

hm. apparently, she actually may be a Catahoula and not a mix. the clincher for me is the webbing as described in the article. i felt is more extensive than i had seen in a dog, but i just thought she was weird.

plus, her first visit to the vet was today and three folks stopped my wife and asked if if the dog was a Catahoula.

suck it, trebek.

When my mom got her first BMD (who have some herding instinct despite it not being their primary purpose) he would herd my nephews. It was very cute! smile
