MagSafe alternative

This forum used to be called "Windows for Addicts" and it would have made a lot more sense to post this topic there rather than here, but I see no better place for it.

My dad's company refuses to support anything made by Apple, even if it's a Mac running Windows through Boot Camp. They'll buy him a PC of his choice, as long as it's under $1500. Having broken his last computer by tripping over the AC adapter and dragging the laptop onto the floor, he would love nothing more than a MacBook with MagSafe. Unfortunately, Apple owns all the patents to MagSafe. This seems like a pretty important issue; certainly my dad isn't the first person ever to kill his laptop by tripping over the AC adapter. What's the next best thing in the PC world?

Windows for Addicts + Chain of Command Line = Boot Camp
We're technically not "Addicts" anymore and there's not enough DOS, Windows, or alternate Posix style OS posts to warrant a separate forum for each. Since Boot camp is Apple's official tool for running Alternate OSes and it has a name that can be played with, it's what we went with...

I think it's called an extended warranty, but I could be wrong. I did not see any breakaway power cables, other than the MagSafe ones, when I searched on google or newegg.

Re: MagSafe alternative

I looked all over, didn't find anything like it.  Amazing at first... but not surprising when you stop to think about it.

Re: MagSafe alternative

Making your own ought to be reasonably easy if you can solder and you get a PC that uses a standard type of DC plug.

Dell offers accidental damage coverage on their laptops.

There is no next best thing in the PC world. Inventing one that doesn't violate Apple's patent would require... a smart person, i guess. And a patent lawyer.

Searching those two was my first instinct as well. Come to think of it, it is something of an odd coincidence that the only laptop manufacturer that offers breakaway power cables doesn't offer accidental damage. I'll tell him to consider the latter.

Thanks.

Accidental damage coverage is expensive. For the company.

My friend bought a top of the line Dell Inspiron 9300. 2 years later, he 'accidently' dropped it into a lake for 24 hours and got a Dell XPS M1530 for his 'accident'.

Now of course, not everyone is going to pull that kind of bullsmurf, but my friend can't be the only one to do it.
