My Mom has a year old Sony Vaio that has a Blu Ray burner built in and a HDMI output for playback. Apple has dropped the ball on this -- regardless of the iTMS compete argument.

Sony might be refusing to sell to Apple....are any other PC companies featuring BU drives?

Apple is a member of the Blu-ray group.

Steam? Blu Ray is still struggling to be adopted by the masses. Players just dropped to $200, and sales numbers are still shaky. It's not the revolution DVD was, the economy is crummy, HD on demand is easier, etc etc.
Apple is not going to bend over backwards for a technology that the public still isn't super excited about.I disagree. A third of the movies at my local wal mart are already blu ray. My local blockbuster's Blu ray section is increasing in size. And with the recent bitch-slapping of LCD manufacturers for price fixing, prices have fallen, and HD adoption will surely increase.
Same here.
Local blockbuster is starting to dump their DVD stock in favor of blu-ray.
I might have to get a player soon.
For my PC - I'll hold out until burners are more affordable. I think they are down to ~ $200 range. I'll wait for the quality brands to hit $99.

Actually from what I read Apple wanted slot load burners and Sony only wanted to deal in slot load combos or tray load units. That was a little while back though.

Re: Will Apple EVER have a Blu-ray Mac?
I still haven't used my dual layer burning capabilities for DVDs on my macbook. The blank dual layer disks are too expensive and I have plenty of blank DVD -R to use. So I am not expecting to be using a Blu-Ray player/recorder with my mac anytime soon, even if the price of the equipment falls substantially more.
I can wait for a Blu-Ray burner.

My experience is that if you have the capability to burn DL on the rare occasions you might need it, it becomes all the rarer that you will need it but if you lack the capability to burn DL is almost guaranteed you will need it. I imagine BD will follow the same trend once it becomes more commonplace.

...are they still charging more for blu-ray versions of movies versus their DVD counterparts?

Probably... They never stopped charging more for the DVD versions of movies versus their VHS counterparts even though DVDs were cheaper and easier to produce.

I know on Amazon at least, The Dark Knight costs more on Blu-ray than on DVD, but I haven't looked at any other movies or stores.

I really like the idea of going ahead with Blu-Ray.. on this subject, this quote is all I think for Apple.

Re: Will Apple EVER have a Blu-ray Mac?
I honestly don't see Apple ever adopting Blu-Ray. Not only would they have to mess with the licensing for something that isn't horribly popular it kind of competes with iTunes. And that is a valid reason, look at the xbox 360 (it had an HD DVD drive but no blu-ray now).

Why aren't you watching these movies on a TV?
I have to say, the actual demand for Blu-Ray drives is pretty low. At this point, I still see most PS3s serving as Blu-Ray drives, which isn't very many people to begin with.
Is there some sort of specific set up you have at home that would require your computer to have a Blu-Ray drive?
How about an HD tv. I bet ya that a lot of Apple's target consumers also have HD sets, more than most brands would (e.g., high end buyers), and I also bet that they would like the option for the $$$ they paid for cutting edge Apple products to be able to hook up and play high def movies as opposed to having to pay for a separate blue-ray drive. At least I would.

I don't want to use my computer to play BD on my HDTV, but I would like to burn me a BD-R with footage from my antiquated, firewire based HDV video camera.

I don't even watch DVDs on my PC.
When I install a Blu-Ray drive, it's purpose is going to be writing media.
It's the storage capacity that makes it worth it.
With respect to television - the only reason I may go Blu-Ray in the next few months is so that I can start buying Blu-ray media instead of DVD media, reducing the amount of content I have that will need to be upscaled when I finally do go hdtv.
For computers though, it's burning massive amounts of data that really makes it worth it.

tripled.
I have a 720p capable tv, but I don't have the dough to spend on the player or the media. 30 bucks for a movie is just too much IMO and the players are still too expensive. Hopefully the economy, and the lack of a format war will bring the prices down soon. I really would love to have Dark Knight be my first BR movie and thus the reason to get a player, that and as stated above, transition from dvd to BR.

What do you back up to and how much data do you have?
Frankly I have a few files that won't even fit on a SL-DVD and one that wont fit on a DL-DVD
Thats not getting into the fact that when I fill my memory card on my DSLR it takes up almost a full DVD.

It's archiving ripped flac files that does it for me.
Currently I archive to DVD-R - you have to reburn every few years to prevent media going south.
If my disk goes south, the DVD-R is my backup (I burn each DVD-R twice).
With Blu-Ray - far less disks would be needed.
Also good for archiving digital photos. Not just the original image file, but the cropped, resized, color corrected etc. images.
It builds up fast. With images, I mail a couple DVD-R's to my parents so that if my house burns down, the images are not lost. Blu-Ray would make that easier.
I do not currently shoot digital video, but if I ever do - you can bet Blu-ray will be needed for archiving that as well.
In all liklihood I will continue to use my DVD-RW as my primary media drive, and will probably rarely use the Blu-Ray - but I will use it.
I just want to wait, as tech keeps getting better and price keeps dropping. When a good brand is $99 - NewEgg will get my purchase.
The media is still a bit pricey, but for occasional use it probably is affordable now.

I think the official term for it is redundant backup. I'll have to wait until the price threshold are a bit lower then res's but my plans and reasoning are about the same.

So why don't you just use backup hard drives? They're far faster and far more affordable per GB.
I've just got far too much data to find DVD or even Blu-Ray useful for backups. Hell, my photo drive alone just passed 300GB. I just buy my hard drives in pairs so every drive has a matching drive dedicated to do it's backup.

They take up more room to store.
They are also heavier to send to a relative for off site storage.
