Nope, just smarter than you apparently. In all my years of running Windows boxes I have gotten exactly <ZERO> virus or other malware.
You were just lucky. There were plenty of worms that didn't require much in the way of user intervention to spread - the security holes were that bad.

Yup... Sure thing... You know just what you are talking about.

I am surprised that thinking is still around. With the continued evolution and integration of our computers with other devises, AND the continued growth of Mac into a bigger player in the field (it is really really well suited to media center uses), I was under the impression that everyone in the know was quietly rethinking the issue, and making plans for protecting our computers. I, for one, haven't done anything yet, but I watch for all the news and advice i can find, because it seems inevitable. Now that I think about it, it seems that in many discussions (threads), useful information is suppressed as a result.

Sony might be refusing to sell to Apple....are any other PC companies featuring BU drives?
Indeed, my friend just got a Dell laptop that has a bluray, and HDMI. Actually pretty cool, and about 8-9 hundred bucks. But the answer is, yes others have them as well. Obviously they are available separately as well; I am adding a pioneer to my Mac pro.
It occurs to me (yes, I am old enough to remember the Beta-VHS war, and was in the business) that Sony would make the cost for licenses as cheap as possible, which the failed to do in the Beta situation, and which was the single reason they "lost". Ultimately, software availability drives the train, and JVC virtually gave away licenses, and pretty soon the software makers decided the issue, simply based on the numbers of VHS players in customer's homes. You can bet Sony remembers that.

I'm officially getting sick of waiting for a Blu-ray equipped Mac. So sick that I'm seriously considering switching to Windoze if Apple doesn't release one by mid-2009... the lack of Blu-ray on the new MacBooks at a time when everyone else is rolling it out and Blu-ray is gaining massive steam has me worried, plus the Stevester's "bag of hurt" comments.
I don't care if Apple plans on launching 1080p movie downloads via iTunes at MWSF. It is not a substitute for Blu-ray, especially with ISPs (not mine, fortunately) doing caps, overages, and such. How big would a 1080p full-length movie be in file size... 10 GB? That's twice the size of Time Warner's base cap they're testing in Beaumont, TX! Even Apple's buddy AT&T is testing caps with overages ranging from 20 to 150 GB. I'm afraid that caps are the wave of the future (look at Canada and Australia), and that Apple may be swimming against the tide.
MFfan310, regardless of all the arguments that have sprung up over what you said, I agree with your general position, but it seem people like OWC are beginning to deliver external drives (assuming you can't use an internal), so you can add one, and still have your Mac. Or am I missing something?
Edited to add the obvious comment that I got into this thread a little late!

My point was that doesn't necessarily take a moron.

Your point also assumes that nobody who works for a tech firm is a moron. Not a safe bet.

Considering that my links were of things coming preloaded are you absolutely sure you don't want to reevaluate your assumption about what my statement assumes?

I think many of us are basing our statements on computers in general and Macs in particular. That said since viruses are not particularly a problem on the Mac, there have still been instances were bugs have been just as problematic. Lest we forget iTunes 2.0 for OS X or File Vault in OS X 10.3.

Certainly... did not mean to offend, since I actually thought your response insightful, which is why I separated the other comment. But the point I was after is that "virus issues", referring to malicious code of any kind, should be on everyone's radar, as we want to integrate our computers more and more into our lifestyle. So, even with the correction of my assumption, I think that message has to stay on point. I will say as a positive observation, that the attitude has changed for the better (more awareness), in the two short years I have been a Mac fan and user.

Re: Will Apple EVER have a Blu-ray Mac?
I have a tip for you it involves the key next to the "a" key. It's called caps lock. TURN IT OFF.
Oh, and only a low life loser would pull that stunt involving the drive switch.

Re: Will Apple EVER have a Blu-ray Mac?
I think it's at least safe to say that when Apple does release one blueray equipped machine, it will release all of its computers equipped with BR. Apple did the same thing with it's superdrive. I'm sure an imac will be just as likely to get it as a tower.

I think the superdrive spread rather slowly through the models, and the transition isn't over yet...

Fourthded
My MacBook from last Summer still only has a Combo Drive. Even now, the lowest Mac mini still has a Combo. If a Blu-Ray player ever comes into a Mac, it will definitely start at the highest ends and be an option for lower ends. It would be years before they were standard across the board.

Tape backup is still a standard. So use VHS.

It should be, but because of the way most ISP's keep dicking around with bandwidth caps we're not there yet, ideally speaking.

Re: Will Apple EVER have a Blu-ray Mac?
I think there's probably still a large supply of non Blu-Ray drives in the various inventories from which Apple draws, and until it's apparent that the lack of Blu-ray seriously impacts sales, Apple should continue to push the current supplies.
