The problem with Illinois Democrats is the same problem that lead to the surge in Republican scandals in Washington: Way too much solidarity within the party ranks.
Loyalty is good but cared too far it creates a context where corruption and ugly behavior can flourish.

Party loyalty is a disaster, because it almost invariably replaces "thinking". Instead, we get people who vote based on the D or the R. I really wish there was either many parties, or no parties.

That is part of why I generally preffer Democrats over Republicans. While there are exception like Illinois where the Dems have a serious problem in state government, Nationally Dems do not walk in zombie lock step like the republicans do.
The great diversity on the democrat side is much healthier than the hive mind of the Reps.

Among the more lurid allegations in the criminal complaint against Gov. Rod Blagojevich was that he wanted a $50,000 contribution from the head of Children's Memorial Hospital for backing $8 million in state funding.
He tried to shake down a Children's Hospital. Could this guy be any more of a caricature?
Geez, even the mob bosses, drug lords, and party bosses would make big obvious no-strings-attached charitable contributions.
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

There are reasons I have the opinion I do of Democrats.
Perhaps now some of you understand.
I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Lifeline. I got a call center in Pakistan, and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.

I would agree that Democrats are pretty bad in Illinois but if you lived where I do you would understand my complete contempt for Republicans.

Not misunderstood as much as thought of as bullsmurf.

Corrupt politicians come in all flavors. Your opinion of Illinois state politicians was thought of as bullsmurf?

Wasn't the las Ill gov, who also was corrupt, a republican?
And weren't you saying Obama got his senate seat because the previous republican senator was corrupt? I don't see a reason to believe it's just the ill dems that are corrupt, based on what you've said.

Ok, one at a time.
The previous Gov was convicted and is in jail. License for bribes was what started his downfall.
The Reps didn't have any chance in the last gov race, even though Blago wasn't liked, because Ryan had just been convicted and Topenka was too associated with him in the peoples minds.
Obama and Rahm did the campaign strategy and helped reelect Blago despite trying to distance themselves from him now. It wasn't any secret what he was then but I'll admit there wasn't the public evidence we currently have available to us.
Obama got elected Senator after sealed court records about Jack and Jeri (7 of 9) Ryan's divorce. Before the release he was so far behind winning wasn't even considered. Oddly enough the exact same thing happened to Blair Hull, another Obama opponent.
(Interesting side note, the LA times sued to have the Ryan divorce records unsealed.
They refused to release the Obama attending the anti Israel dinner video. Small world isn't it.)

So people think it's "bullsmurf" that you base your opinion of a national party on your exposure to the state politics of one out of fifty states? Here I thought you simply rejected them because of their policies!

Didn't the guy back out of the race?

Is it "interesting?" Do you know why they refused to release it?

Yeah, Blago probably won't get that commutation.
I honestly can't decide which is worse - selling a Senate seat or outing a covert agent for political revenge.
Either one is pretty treasonous.
If I recall, the conviction was for lying to the grand jury, there was no conviction for outing a covert agent - and I believe they found Libby wasn't the source. But anyway ...

I think I live closer to Chi, and have a closer knowledge of area politics (Cook, DuPage, Lake Counties etc) than perhaps anyone here. Reading some of the generalizations is kind of funny. (Side Q- Kev, you're a downstater, no?)
Anyhoo RB held a press conference (sorry, no link; busy. Videos all over for the finding). He vowed to "fight, fight, fight" this thing "until his dying breath." Assuming he doesn't expect to be executed over this, sounded like his inner drama queen and martyr were fighting for elbow room in the spotlight. He doesn't really have much flair for theater, and methinks the lady doth protest too much.
