Mac -> XBOX FTP is killing me inside

I'm about ready to throw my XBOX out of the window at this point, so here goes:

I have a splinter cell exploit soft modded XBOX running Unleash X 0.38

I tried to FTP to it through my Airport (XBOX plugged in, intel iMac on wireless) and after about 30 minutes of random fiddling I got it to connect ONCE and successfully transfered SNES9Xbox and NeoGenesis.  I reset the XBOX to see if they installed correctly (they did) but I could NOT for the life of me get it to connect again (and i didn't copy any ROMs, GRRR!).

It really makes no difference to me to just use the ethernet port on the back of the imac, but that requires a crossover cable, which I don't have; however, I have heard that newer macs can automatically switch the two wires to make it work as a crossover cable, is this true?  in other words, should I be able to directly connect my XBOX to my iMac for FTP functions with a straight through cable and successfully FTP to it?  That would be WONDERFUL if I didn't have to buy a new cable for this crap. All the tutorials also stress to turn off firewalls, and I disabled Norton the best I could, is there something else I should do additionally?  If anyone could coach me on how to get this to work on either the airport or throught the iMac without a crossover cable it would be absolutely awesome.  Like I said, it worked ONCE so I know the XBOX OS can do it and the XBOX modem is working.  Also, under the "Misc" tab it says stuff like "start FTP" "Stop FTP" "reset FTP" and "reset network," is that for FTP XBOX to XBOX or what? should I even be using those options? The how to's online are super vague and very specific to using a PC with FlashFXP and I'm using a Mac with Filezilla.

I believe it is true but not just new Macs. I thought the auto sensing/switching NICs have been in Mac since the G4/Graphite towers when Apple went to 10/100/1000bT. If not a x-over cable is less than $5.
