Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead!

iTunes going DRM free should be the final nail in the coffin for DRM, at least for music.

Uh, can someone confirm that the iTunes Plus upgrade is now all or nothing?  Because I have about 1500 songs from the iTunes Store and I'm not shelling out to upgrade the whole library.

I'm on my work PC right now and can't get into iTunes.

Not sure what you mean by "all or nothing," but the upgrades are $0.30, with discounts for album updates.

From what I've been seeing, your only option is to upgrade your entire library.  You can no longer upgrade individual tracks or albums.

Ah yes, I see what you mean. Yes, it does seem as if you have to update your entire collection. Out of the thousand or so that I've bought, only four albums and five songs are now available for update: $14.04.

Actually, that was never possible with iTunes Plus upgrades; it has always been all or nothing. Also, to clarify the original post, Apple did not just now go DRM-free as of today. iTunes Plus has been around for a while now, but with a poor selection compared to Amazon MP3 and others. What happened today was a significantly expanded selection for iTunes Plus, which is a very good thing.

If ~8,000,000 songs supposedly worth buying are DRM-free, how many worth buying are left on earth to still have DRM? confused

~2,000,000 and those are just that way until the end of the quarter.

Unless you shop the Zune Marketplace or something.

Amazon MP3 is really quite nice. I've used it quite a lot.

Re: Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead!

I have 106 songs that need to be updated. It will cost me $50 to remove DRM from my music.

Plus when you do it, it changes the Date Added. I HATE THAT! I don't want my purchases jumping up in my Date Added (I sort my main playlist by Date Added. It's how I listen to my music!), I'll end up songs I don't even listen to much anymore suddenly being at the top. I don't want that!

Plus, $50? God. And I can't even buy some of the stuff I want now because most of the songs I want on my Wishlist aren't Plus yet. So I'd have to spend an extra 30 cents later on anyway just to have them jump up in my list. I have to wait until March to buy something that's not plus.

I really don't like how this is going. A) Don't change my Date Added! B) Don't charge 30 cents per song to remove restrictions the song shouldn't have had in the first place for the love of Christ. 10 cents maybe. Free definitely. I can't afford $50 to redownload all my purchases! Which would take hours anyway.

No sir, I don't like it.

Re: Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead!

It change the date added because the Plus song was added on the date it was added. Since you can you can keep both versions of the song, it is not technically updating as far as the software is concerned.

BTW 106 song should be about $31.80

And I was responding to the Zune Marketplace part of your post, which isn't an option for Mac users. Amazon MP3 is.

Edit: Whoops, for the second half of my post that used to be here, I had confused MacLife with MacStack.

Re: Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead!

Yes but MP3 doesn't have DRM as far as I know. If anything the best counter would have been and "the Zune Marketplace only really figures into anything if your using Windows." to which I would have agreed but add that "I only threw it out in case someone decided to mention it because I did not."

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you were saying. The Zune Marketplace sells DRM free music and has a DRM-free selection similar to Amazon MP3's. I was taking your post as meaning "Unless you buy from the Zune Marketplace or something to get those songs DRM free without waiting." Was I misunderstanding your post?

Re: Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead!

There are songs that are DRM-free on ZM (defined in this case as DRM-free songs and/or songs that have DRM-free versions) and there are still supposedly some (2/3 last that I heard) which are DRM only. As of this point the point there are 2,000,000 songs on iTS that are still DRM only. That's how many DRMed songs there are unless you count songs on other services with DRM only songs like ZM.

Re: Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead!

Oh, Jesus H. Macy... they added more songs since last time. Now my total is up to $55. 184 songs! Yet 95% of my Wishlist is still regular DRM music. I bet they're gonna be adding them as the day goes on. Tomorrow night it might be up to 250. I have 306 Protected songs still left. How much is that going to cost when all is said and done? $91.80. Almost a hundred bucks to update my music.

Also, when I upgraded last time it did not keep the old songs. Why would you want to anyway? DON'T CHANGE MY DATE! I bought the song on June 3rd, 2007. I want the date to STAY June 3rd, 2007! Exclamation point!

You know it's hard to take your side when your protected song list is more than half the size of my total iTunes music library.

Edit: Now it's up to 193! Well, I suppose I don't HAVE to upgrade the music.. Maybe one day they'll decide to run a special and offer them for free.

I think your only option would be to download the songs to another machine and then manually replace each file in the appropriate directory.  Way too much of a pain in the ass, IMHO.

I totally borked moving my iTunes library to an external HDD last year, so all of my dates are wrong anyway.

Right click where it says "name, time, artist" etc. You'll see a list of column choices. Check the ones you want to see.
