Personal VoIP?

I'm still on break from college, being bored, and I was pondering the idea: Is it possible for me to set up my own VoIP system.

I have extra fairly new Macs that I'm not using, and a constant 6MB/s down cable Internet connection.

I guess my real question is, how does the translation from computer to telephone company work?
Is there a way I could use my cell phone as that translator? I have Verizon--- free weekends and calls after 9 pm.

I'm fairly proficient computer-wise, but I know very little about telephone technologies.

I don't need to do this project, but I was just wondering if any of you have heard of such a thing, or have used it yourself.

And yes, I know about Skype... but that's too easy. smile
