Database Program

I have been doing research into database software because of a unique issue that I have. I have learned that OS X starting with Jaguar has a database core built in called Core Data. Because of my uniqueness of what I am looking for I have no problem taking the time to learn and build something myself. Problem is as of this writing I only have Applescript and HTML as known programming languages. I am guessing that being an OS X program I should learn Cocoa and Objective-C to write anything. But where to start? Should I learn C# first before trying out Objective-C? or start with Cocoa? Is Core Data appropriate? What else could be used, MySQL?

And for those wondering I need a database that is easily searched. The database will hold recipe/formula information along with costing information for that recipe/formula. The recipe/formula needs to have the ability to multiply or divide on how many servings and then give the appropriate costing information related to that recipe/formula size. The instructions to complete the recipe/formula will also be included.

How I see this is the recipe/formula ingredients followed by the costing information and ending with the instructions to complete. I would also like this to have a master ingredient list where prices are input and that is then used to update the prices in each recipe/formula. I understand that this is all going to be a huge undertaking to complete. I would really appreciate any advice anyone can give me. Thank you all in advance, even if it is just reading this post.
