Say hello to the Palm Pre

From the demo of the new OS I think this may push Apple to step up their game and give us MMS and apps that can run in the background. big_smile

Is there a place where I can download a video of the event?

LOL. Yeah it may not look as nice as an iPhone. But its doing stuff that I wish Apple would allow us. The way the Pre handles all IMs and SMS through one App is nice and they all can run in the background. The way it runs multiple apps and allows you to switch apps via a sort of exposé/cover-flow method.

I am personally more interested in the apps than appearance. So far it looks good, but no need to run from my iPhone 3G. Just wish Apple would open up a little more and give real MMS and IM in the background as effortless as SMS

Well if you can charge an iPod with an onion then you can probably charge a Palm with a potato! wink

Re: Say hello to the Palm Pre

I'm interested mostly because it will be on a decent network. AT&T's coverage sucks here.

Pebble shaped enclosure aside for the moment, the prerelease software looks incredibility well designed. I can't wait to play around with one of these things in person.

Now if only I can get my company to make good device interface. hmm

Re: Say hello to the Palm Pre

It scrolls webpages better than the iPhone does, and has a pretty decent UI for multitasking on a phone.

When Peter Kafka asked if the Palm Pre's price would be less than the iPhone's $US199, Palm CEO Ed Colligan replied, "Why would we do that when we have a significantly better product?"

Them's fightin' words.

When i first read the Ars coverage of this, I thought they were fluffing the phone too much, but after seeing videos, i'm intrigued to know Apple's response.

The Pre will allow over-the-air downloads of music from Amazon's catalog and applications. And, personally, I don't see how those other two bullet points are major selling points. shrug

The only thing I worry about is that all the significant updates will be available on the newest rendition and not on the 1st or 2nd gen as an attempt to force the 1st adopters to upgrade (can't see that happening with the current economy). I would again add Copy & Paste to that list. In fact, Copy & Paste needs to be incorporated ASAP. I very BIG omission that has cost me a lot of time with Calendar.

Re: Say hello to the Palm Pre

I like the fact that the Pre pulls info from different sources and displays it all in one place. Not to mention switching between IM and SMS while still leaving the thread intact. Having the touchable area extend below the LCD is nice too so you don't always need to obscure the screen to interact. Not to mention being able to get alerts while using other apps - wasn't that supposed to be in the latest iPhone update? Oh, and the replaceable battery and wireless charging.

It's good to see Apple get some competition. I hope Palm does well.

The 1st gen already has a slower processor, and the enable good multitasking, Apple is going to have to bump the RAM, and I could see applications at the least needing a recompile to work well with multitasking.

At some point, it's going to be too much of a pain for developers to have to try and support all 4 different HW profiles for iPhone OS, and Apple is going to stop upgrading the older HW.

Re: Say hello to the Palm Pre

Personally, I want to see how the multitasking on the Pre pans out. System resources are not infinite, and that fact becomes exponentially more true the smaller your device gets. Pre users will need to manage what few available resources they have, and certain apps will likely need to prompt users to quit things before then can be launched.

I'm curious to see if Palm has designed a cleaver way to resolve these user experience problems.

Apple has opted to solve this problem buy forcing developers to offload "background" tasks to the cloud. Although, I still seem to be waiting for push IM. hmm
