Quick Way to To Change Track Number in iTunes?
I often get albums in iTunes where the track order is not correct. Is there some way (or an applescript add-on) that I can change track number information without individually going to the information pane for each song and changing the track number? I would love to be able to select a number from a contextual menu or some quick way of changing the track numbers for each song. Does anybody know if there is anyway to do something like this?
Thanks,
-Scott

If you click on the Album tab on the top where iTunes has Name then Time, then Artist, then Album. (If album is not there just go to view---> view options and click the Album button so it shows a check mark in the Album box.) This adds a Album Column. When you click Album a direction pointer comes up. If it's pointing down just click it again to change the pointer direction. Your album will come up in the their correct order.

Re: Quick Way to To Change Track Number in iTunes?
Thanks for the quick response. However, my problem is that the tracks in the album either do not have a track number or they have the wrong track number and are there for not coming up in the right order. I'm looking for a quick way to change the track number information for each track without having to go to the information window for each track and type the number in. Any ideas?

I'm sorry I haven't been very clear. Obviously I would have to put the track numbers in myself, I'm just wondering if someone has devised some sort of a drop down menu that I could control click or something of that nature rather than having to open up the information window for each track.

The only way I have seen this is when music taken from a burned copy or downloaded (ex. limewire) of albums.
Original CD's I import to iTunes for me always come with track numbers in there right order from the CD.

Re: Quick Way to To Change Track Number in iTunes?
Typically I'll just sort by filename or whatever method puts them in order and then just select the first one, put my cursor in the track # box and type as fast as I can 1, cmd+n, 2, cmd+n, 3, cmd+n, 4, cmd+n, 5, cmd+n, 6....
I've also used this successfully but you have to find the EXACT album you're trying to touch up.

Re: Quick Way to To Change Track Number in iTunes?
CG5Addict posts for me. I have my Music Library set to Date Added (top) by default to track new additions, but when I've newly downloaded an album from iTMS or Amazon, or ripped a CD (and set iTunes prefs to number new files), I change the Library's sort order from Date Added to Album (top) to get the cuts in the correct album order.
Since I like to have a Playlist for each album I own, I then Shift Select all the album cuts (now in the correct order) and drag the files to the leftmost Library column, wait for the cursor to change to a green + sign and then release, to have iTunes create and name the new album's Playlist for me.
This is great, however after a while I started to want my leftmost column Playlists to read Last Name, First Name (for artists other than bandnames) and I have a great iTunes AppleScript that will batch change Playlist names, if anyone is interested I will post it.
The batch script will, in one click, change all the Playlist names that match all at once, for ex.,:
Bud Powell - The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1
Bud Powell - The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 2
Bud Powell - The Scene Changes
will, in one click, become:
Powell, Bud - The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1
Powell, Bud - The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 2
Powell, Bud - The Scene Changes
so I have have a correctly alphabetized album collection, which makes finding albums in iTunes much easier!

Re: Quick Way to To Change Track Number in iTunes?
Scott,
This is a huge pet peeve of mine too when dealing with iTunes. Please let me know if you ever come across of an easier way to input track #'s. I put a playlist together containing different artists and I would like to put track numbers in for the exact order that the playlist is currently in right now so that I can refer back to this exact playlist [in same order] again. I know I can manually input the track number for each song one at a time, but that is extremely tedious and I am too trying to find an easier means of doing so. If you stumble across anything, please let me know.
Thank You,
Cameron
