Why do we still listen to Republicans?

They whine for years about "welfare queens" who pop out kids and then whine about the government assisting poor women with family planning.
Obama wins by a healthy margin on a platform including infrastructure rebuilding to help the economy and they counter with the same old failed "tax cuts only" plan.
They double the national debt in only 8 years and suddenly decide that nonessential (read: non-war) spending must all go away in the name of fiscal responsibility.

With any luck, the utter disaster that PNAC's foreign policy has been will discredit the neoconservative movement forever, but why do we still listen to the clowns who represent mainstream Republicans in Congress? As far as their "loyal opposition" positions have been... "nuh-uh" would have been a better response.

Because even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

No, because it's what lots of people still want to hear. And in the absence of a coherent message, cutting taxes is the best they have.

Only if it's analog and then it's still wrong 1438 times a day (86,398 if it counts seconds too).

The whining is that the money (which is a hell of a lot) needs to go towards proving jobs.

Furthermore, the Dems completely excluded the Repubs in the authoring of the bill - their comment about "well includes tax cuts which republicans like" is nothing short of an intentional slap in the face.

I have high hopes for Obama, but he's going to have to fight his own party - or things are only going to become more partisan than they already are, the opposite of Obama's stated (and I believe him, hopefully not out of naivety) goal.

How much of President Obama/ Democratic House plan is to be spent on infrastructure?

I think Obama will be pissing off the old guard Dems almost as much as the Reps during his term.

"The plan ... was developed with no Republican input and appears to be grounded in the flawed notion that we can simply borrow and spend our way back to prosperity," Boehner said in a statement.

Re: Why do we still listen to Republicans?

I thought the republicans spent eight years using the "borrow and spend" method of money management to dig  us into the biggest hole any country has ever been in... why would they suddenly have a problem with it now?  The letter after the representative's name isn't (R) ?

There's a word for that.  It's on the tip of my tongue.  Hypnotist... Hypochondriac... Hypodermic... what is that word...

What's the problem? America borrowed and spent its way into prosperity before, why not again?

Re: Why do we still listen to Republicans?

Republicans are still open to supporting a stimulus package in the House, a GOP leadership aide tells the Huffington Post, despite reports that they will oppose it.

Reports by Politico and the AP that Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told House Republicans in a closed-door meeting to oppose the stimulus bill are accurate, the aide said. But Republicans will appeal to President Obama today to make changes to the House bill, holding out the possibility they will still support the final package.

Obama meets this afternoon with the entire Republican conference. "I think what our big moves will be today are to ask the President to help us. Help us make this plan better so that it will put Americans back to work," said Boehner before the meeting.

House Republicans appear sensitive to criticism that they rejected the stimulus before meeting with Obama. Yet a Democratic aide said he doubted the sincerity of the Republicans' new openness. "Boehner already said he wouldn't vote for it, so why are they bothering to meet with the President if they've already decided they will oppose?" he wondered. "Will they even say what they want now or just constantly moving the goalposts?"

Re: Why do we still listen to Republicans?

After the way the GOP treated Democrats when they controlled Congress, they shouldn't be surprised at all. The honest truth is that their votes aren't really needed in the House - and not that many are needed in the Senate.

Just need 2 in the Senate.
Politically the smart thing is for them to make the Dems own everything done.
