download speed!
hi i'm new to this forum and lookin for some help, i have a macbook 2ghz 1gb667 mhz while i'm getting 3g on my speed test i'm struggling to say download a movie or anything its really slow often runnin as slow as 19 kbs! has anyone any ideas how to speed this up!! cheers!

If you're with certain ISP's such as Comcast, the ISP knows what file type you are downloading. If the file type is considered low priority, then that's the reason.
Does this download issue happen with YouTube ?

no pretty much everything i try to download, just frustrating could it be down to anti virus software or a firewall ihave sophos anti virus

As other posts indicated, there's no way you're getting anywhere near that speed. The speed test is probably reporting 3 megabits per second. So, 3Mbps. Notice I wrote Mbps, not just M. Also note that it's megabits, not megabytes. A megabit is only an eighth of a megabyte.
You were probably thinking the speed test was reporting 3 Gigabytes per second.
3 gigabytes x 8 = 24 gigabits
24 gigabits x 1,024 = 24,576 megabits
24,576 megabits / 3 megabits = 8,192
So, the speed you probably thought the test results were saying was 8,192 times faster than what it was actually saying.

OK, so we've determined that we have no idea how fast your connection actually is, but I think we can be sure that it's faster than 19kbps. So where did you get that number? Where are you downloading from? If it's a torrent or other P2P we won't be able to help you. Your download speeds are completely dependent on the other users' upload speeds. Ain't nothing you can do there.
...and be careful. We can't discuss illegal downloading here so we'll just assume you own the rights to the movie's you're downloading.

There are various sites to help test your connection speed, easily googled.
Perhaps this would be better in In Tech News where I was going to post it; but since I forgot to and it's relevant...
Joining forces with some close friends, Google has given the world an online lab for testing the behavior of its internet connections.
Yesterday, in tandem with the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute and the PlanetLab Consortium, the search giant unveiled Measurement Lab - a distributed server platform where online researchers can set up their very own net tests.
"Researchers are already developing tools that allow users to, among other things, measure the speed of their connection, run diagnostics, and attempt to discern if their ISP is blocking or throttling particular applications," reads a Googlicious blog post. "These tools generate and send some data back-and-forth between the user's computer and a server elsewhere on the Internet. Unfortunately, researchers lack widely-distributed servers with ample connectivity. This poses a barrier to the accuracy and scalability of these tools. Researchers also have trouble sharing data with one another.
