32 and 64bit question
So if you have an OS on a machine with only 2 Gigs of ram and is 64 bit, is there going to be any improvement in general computing performance?

Re: 32 and 64bit question
Its dependent as to whether the OS is 64-bit, whether your machine supports it, and the apps running. (Will they be 64-bit as well?)

Re: 32 and 64bit question
As far as I know, 64 bit doesn't improve performance on G5s, but it does on Intel due to aditional registers being used. I seem to remember mo'ron posting something to that affect a few years ago, at any rate.

I thought it was speculation within the last month or so.

So the apps being 32 bit mostly their won't be any increase. Makes sense. Even if the app is 64-bit and there is only 2 gigs of ram would it only be like running on 32-bit

Re: 32 and 64bit question
Depends on what you're doing. If you're doing double precision math then 64bit is faster since it can store the whole thing and compute at once.
If you only have 2Gb of RAM, then 64bit isn't going to benefit you a whole lot since 32bit apps can still address all the memory you have.
