Install OS X from the Command Prompt?

My neighbors gave me back my old Cube, having installed Leopard, which I believe is incompatible. I get a black screen at boot.

I booted into Single User mode, and everything's there and fsck-ed fine. As I restarted I noted UNIX mentioned the Cube's poor old Rage 128 isn't compatible. I'd like to install Tiger to regain the use of the Cube, but only get the black screen when booting off the Install CD.

I'm wondering if I can install from Single User and, by some miracle, undo the damage Lep's ATI upgrade has wrought?

Re: Install OS X from the Command Prompt?

The black screen is just because of a bad video driver, presumably.

You'd have to boot from the CD... why can't you boot from the CD?

Re: Install OS X from the Command Prompt?

I have to assume I am booting from the CD, but get a black screen with which to interact while booted off it, making installation difficult if not impossible.

While I've never tried it, I'm considering installing while the Cube is booted in Target Disk mode, attached to my Mac Pro. I'll have to hunt down a legacy Rage 128 driver most likely, too. Yikes.

Wont work ... the Mac Pro is intel and the cube is PPC

Re: Install OS X from the Command Prompt?

The mac Pro would have to be in target mode, but then it's the same as using the internal drive.
Although.. Isn't the system install universal binary, thus eventually allowing what brainiac suggested?

It's doable but you can't just install from an Intel and expect a PPC to boot it.

Re: Install OS X from the Command Prompt?

Could I at least wipe the Cube while it's in Target Mode, and would that take the ATI driver with it?

Re: Install OS X from the Command Prompt?

If you format, that should wipe everything.

Ah, but if it was actually booting from the CD, it would be using the driver on the CD. Which is a Tiger CD, right?

Hence my assumption that you're not actually booting from the CD.
