setting up a server on an existing network
This is a technical question, far beyond my normal ken. I am setting up a Linux server on my home network. The primary DHCP server is my Linksys router. And while I understand the basics of addressing I'm not seeing what it is I should do. I'm not looking for a hardware solution.
I want to put the Linux server on the home network and I know that I can't have it functioning as a DHCP server. So should I assign it a static IP address? Should I put it on a separate subnet?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
The interior network is as follows.
Gateway 192.168.1.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Starting IP address 192.168.1.25
20 users max.
I was wondering if I should set up a route assign an IP address outside of the subnet mask and route to that address.

Re: setting up a server on an existing network
keep the gateway and subnet mask the same
assign it a static address outside the dhcp range ... in your case something between 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.24
You actually could have the new server hand out the dhcp addresses but it isn't necessary so you might as well keep the linksys as the dhcp server.

Ok, I was looking at the other side of the range of assigned IP addressses. I'll do it as you suggested. Thank you kindly, sir.

Static IPs ftw.
