need to rename a load of files in diff folders - possible?
I have lots of folders of .psd files and .jpg files within each one. they are named in a particular way, that I need to change a word in each one's file name to another one of my choice, ie:
this_is_a_file_august.psd needs to be changed to this_is_a_file_*february*.psd
any idea if his is possible - is it easy - as its taking a while to go into each one and change it

yes it's possible. And there are several solutions out there. Even Applescript or Automator could do it if you have the cojones to program that much.
Two programs that I am familiar with are File Buddy, and Name Those Files.
Name Those Files is nice because you can use either text find and replace or GREP, which is very powerful.

I'll second Sturner's recommendation of Automator... I never realized just how useful and powerful it was until I had to batch rename about 148 files at work.

I have never touched Atomator and I guess its complicated to set this up? I've just downloaded Name Those Files - wow, its really good, easy to pick up and I didn't even need to read the manual.
only thing is - 7 day trial runs out - and then I will see if Automator can work as easy as this.
thanks

Autmomater appears more complicated than it really is. Once you start using it, you'll probably catch on to it pretty quickly.

Personally I like and use A Better Finder Rename. It has many renaming functions beyond word replacement.
