Re: Where is everyone ... new imac .. mac pro ... and mini

I'm amazed at the new iMacs. You used to get sub-par graphic options with it (slower cards + less VRAM), but now you can put the same graphic card that the new Mac Pro uses! 1799 for a Nvidia 256 GT 120, add 150 and you got the 512 GT 130 that performes better than the Mac Pro standards 512 Gt 120 add another mere 50 and you get Radeon HD 4850 with 512, while not as beast like as the 4870 it still kicks ass!

Re: Where is everyone ... new imac .. mac pro ... and mini

I'm still waiting for my new 17 mbp to arrive, only been waiting since Feb 19th and it said 2-3wks when I placed my order. The wait is pissing me off. (was in the apple store this past Friday and they just got their display units in stock earlier that day, but not any resale units)
So at least its nice to know that the new minis and iMac for the time being are shipping same day as the order.
Since the delay of the 17" people have been buying out the stock of the high end 15 and now their is a delay on that 2. I wonder if we are ever going to find out what delayed the 17" for near 2 months in the 1st place.

had my 17inch macbook for about 2 weeks now, got yours?

Its pretty impressive. the most powerful computer i have ever bought. Which is strange, cause compared to the first computer i ever bought, a DELL desktop, the macbook pisses all over it. It's amazing how technology advances.

The old DELL had a 1.8mhz processor and 512mb of RAM. The macbook has 2.93ghz processor, 4gb RAM. But i am waiting for crucial.com to update their stock so that i can upgrade to 8gb of RAM and go wild.

I got mine on the 19th, where in the world are you aaron?

I must be missing something. When I take the 3rd imac and bring it's cpu/hdd/videocard up to par with the 4th one, it's 20 bucks cheaper (apple.ca)

Re: Where is everyone ... new imac .. mac pro ... and mini

i'm going to skip to the bottom without having read the rest as I want to rant. Please forgive me if this has been stated.

WTF is with the Geforce GT 120? I have been able to find very little information about this card other than saying it's comparable to the 8800 series. Really Apple? No GTX260 or even 280 for a premium priced tower? Really Nvidia a smurfing nother confusing name change in an already craptastic line of name changes? the 9000 series is a joke as the 8800gt and gts are comparable for price to performance and the gtx 2xx series is overpriced (although now come down due to lackluster sales b/c of the overpricing) and then you had manufacture probs, etc. WTH is going on?

I prefer Nvidia due to better drivers and more support for high-end 3d apps with the CUDA and what not but god they are practically telling me to go ATI!  Their 300 series better have a mac equivalent out the gate.

WTF!!!!!!

/rant

now to go read more about the upgrades and your posts.

Re: Where is everyone ... new imac .. mac pro ... and mini

/rant continued

why the hell isn't there an iMac with a quad core processor yet? Apple's only quads are doubled up in a tower. There is no medium build for these guys!

I understand why no quad in a lappy: heat. Is this the same issue for the iMac?

i love Apple and I love updates, but this is smurfing retarded. It's like one foot progressively moving forward and another stuck in aging or under performing tech.

I just don't get it. I really wish Apple would enlighten us sometimes on their thinking process.

Now i gotta save up for a tower if I want peak 3d modeling performance or just custom build a pc. Bleh.

you can buy a single quad core tower.

2.66Ghz QuadCore-Nehalem w/24"LED CD ---2.2Ghz BlackMB---15" 2.4Ghz MBP(work)
Dual 2.3Ghz G5 (4G Ram, 2x 250G HD)(10.5 server)--- 400Mhz G4 PM (10.4 Server)

So for over 2000 CAD I can get a subpar machine compared to something I could build for 1000 which would be much better

This is certainly a heat issue with iMacs - they are part of Steve's quiet computer philosophy and depend primarily on convection-cooling. Actually a nice feature in the iMacs.

The Mini is finally not a stepchild in terms of performance, but it's hardly priced correctly for what you get.  $599 and no keyboard and mouse (much less a monitor)?  For that price, they should at least give you the keyboard and mouse.  Otherwise the price point should be more like $449 and $649 or better yet, $399 and $599.

Given the option between a hackintosh netbook, and Mac Mini, what would you take?

Why should it be less than the cost of a Mini minus the cost of a wired mouse & keyboard (~$100)? (That totals out to $499 to $699.)

If I wanted the challenge of fighting to make an OS supported on hardware with no warranty of it working right in the first place or lasting a year, I would have done it by now. If I needed or even wanted a laptop I would have got one and one with a bit more juice than a typical netbook by now.

NVidia is unifying their product naming scheme. The old 9400-9600 midrange cards were rereleased as the GT 120/130. The 9800 is the GTX 250, and the 26x/28x are new tech. The 295 is basically a pair of 260s on a card.

It actually makes a fair amount of sense, since the 1xx series are the low end cards and the 2xx series are the high end cards (although imho, the 9800 almost deserves like a 220 rating, considering the performance difference).

I am also rather disappointed in the continuing lack of cutting-edge GPUs in the tower. But if you're not used to it by now... shrug

A 3+ GHz Core Duo really is still a pretty medium build. As a multitasking addict, I'll pimp quad core to anybody who will listen, but I'm honest enough to know that there are very few circumstances where having the 4 cores makes that much of a difference, my usage habits are atypical and giving up single-threaded performance to maintain price point or thermal specs leaves a bad taste in some people's mouths.

If you do 3D rendering, Apple wants you to buy a Mac Pro.

Mac mini hands down

If I wanted to putts around with getting an OS to work ... I would use Windows or some sort of Unix.

Well, because I actually think the price point is too high even with a keyboard and mouse included.  It's especially high with neither.  If I was being honest with what I think it's worth without the kb/mouse, I'd say $399/$599.

Same here.  I have no desire to dink around just to get the damn thing to work right.  That's what Ubuntu is for.  And I don't really enjoy that either.

$300 for a 500GB network hard drive. Wow.... just wow...

I like apple products, I think that Mac OS, from 7.5, my first mac, to OS X has been the cleanest, most efficient OS of its time compared to all the competition, but a lot of their pricing is beyond ridiculous nowadays, especially for users with a bit of technical know-how.
